National Aviation Hall of Fame release
National Aviation Hall of Fame reveals names of four to be inducted in Enshrinee "Class of 2016"

Announcement made at NBAA Convention - October 2016 ceremony enshrines first Shuttle pilot, Medal of Honor recipient, NASA pioneer and former EAA leader

Today the National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) announced the names of four individuals who have been elected for enshrinement at its annual formal ceremony on Saturday, October 1, 2016 in Dayton. Enshrinement Director Ron Kaplan and NAHF Trustee Phil Roberts revealed the names before an audience of nearly 1,000 attendees at a special session of the annual National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Each year, the NAHF Board of Nominations, a voting body comprised of over 120 aviation professionals nationwide, selects a handful of previously nominated air and space pioneers to be recognized for their achievements with enshrinement into the NAHF. Since its founding in 1962, 229 men and women have been so honored.

The NAHF Class of 2016 is a diverse group representing a broad range of enduring contributions to both the advancement of flight and the manned exploration of space. The four to be formally enshrined on October 1, 2016 are:
  • Capt. Robert L. Crippen, USN (Ret) – Former Naval Aviator who later joined the NASA astronaut corps, piloting first NASA Space Shuttle mission, STS-1, and three others before transitioning to Shuttle mission director roles.
  • The late Col. George "Bud" Day, USAF (Ret) – Marines Corps combat veteran of WWII who became Air Force fighter pilot in Korea and S.E. Asia; shot down and spent 67 months as Vietnam War POW, earning the Medal of Honor.
  • Christopher "Chris" Kraft, Jr. – NACA Aeronautical Engineer who became NASA's first Flight Director, creating, implementing and directing its Mission Control Center for manned space flight programs.
  • Tom Poberezny – Two-time former aerobatic champion and air show performer who later served as President, Chairman and CEO of the EAA; established the EAA Young Eagles program to encourage youth to become pilots.
The 54th Annual NAHF Enshrinement Dinner & Ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the National Aviation Hall of Fame Learning Center and the adjacent National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. Often referred to as "America's Oscar Night of Aviation," the black-tie ceremony is open to the public and reservations are available by advance purchase from the NAHF. A sell-out crowd is expected.

The National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization founded in Dayton in 1962 and chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1964. Its mission is to honor America's aerospace legends to inspire future leaders, which it does through a 17,000 square-foot public Learning Center featuring interactive exhibits, a youth education program, other public outreach programs, its annual enshrinement ceremony, and collaboration with like-minded organizations.

It's a darn shame they waited so long to induct Col Day. Happens all the time with awards. It's stupid to honor people shortly after they've passed when they could have done it while they were still alive. He's greatly deserving but they should have done this years ago. Sometimes it almost makes it seem like an after-thought. "oh yeah, we should have inducted Col Day when he was alive. Let's do it now." Am I off-base with this?

Nope, you've got that about right. Feels like an empty gesture, it's not like they didn't have enough time.

National Aviation Hall of Fame release
Gene Cernan to receive Neil Armstrong Outstanding Achievement Award

54th Annual NAHF Enshrinement Dinner and Ceremony takes place October 1 in Dayton

The National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) announced today (May 5) that retired Navy Captain and NASA astronaut, Eugene "Gene" Cernan, will receive its 2016 Neil Armstrong Outstanding Achievement Award on Oct. 1, 2016.

Capt. Cernan, who commanded the Apollo 17 mission in December 1972, is one of only twelve humans to have stepped foot on the moon and the last man to do so. Capt. Cernan was a U.S. Navy attack fighter pilot when he was selected to apply for the astronaut corps, ultimately serving as a pilot or commander on three record-breaking space missions: Gemini 9A, Apollo 10 and Apollo 17.

A 2000 enshrinee of the NAHF, Capt. Cernan has devoted much of his post-NASA career publicly advocating for personal empowerment and development, especially among youth, as well as for the revival of U.S. manned space exploration.

The NAHF Neil Armstrong Outstanding Achievement Award was established in 2015, named after the first man to walk on the lunar surface and a 1979 enshrinee of the Hall of Fame. The award was established by the NAHF to annually recognize an exceptional one-time aviation performance of national or international significance, or an enduring series of events that demonstrates life-long dedication to leadership in promoting aviation and values of citizenship, dignity, integrity, and service. The Armstrong Award recipient is determined by a committee of five NAHF Board members.

Capt. Cernan will personally accept the award during the NAHF 54th Annual Enshrinement Dinner and Ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016. Widely known as the "Oscar Night of Aviation," the black-tie event takes place at the NAHF Learning Center and adjacent National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

The ceremony features the induction of the Enshrinee Class of 2016: Former test-pilot and astronaut Robert L. Crippen, USN (Ret); the late fighter pilot and Medal of Honor recipient, Col. George "Bud" Day, USAF (Ret); NASA's first Flight Director, Christopher "Chris" Kraft; and former EAA President, Chairman and CEO, Tom Poberezny.

Neil Armstrong was a native of Wapakoneta, Ohio, a former Naval aviator, and a record-setting test pilot. After joining the astronaut program in 1962, he served as Command Pilot for Gemini 8 in 1966. As Spacecraft Commander on Apollo 11, he made history on July 20, 1969, by becoming the first man to walk on the moon. Armstrong was inducted into the NAHF in 1979, and passed away in 2012.

The 54th Annual NAHF Enshrinement Dinner and Ceremony is open to the public by advance registration only, and sponsor tables featuring premium seating remain available. A capacity crowd is expected to attend. To make reservations or for more information, visit nationalaviation.org or call 937-256-0944 ext. 19.
