This morning, my eleven year-old son and I attended the St. Tammany Parish Prayer Breakfast in Mandeville, LA. that featured Charlie Duke as the main speaker. This is only our second astronaut encounter, and our first with an Apollo astronaut. It was a pleasure and honor to meet Gen. Duke. He was very gracious meeting everyone, including my son. The place was a who's-who of local officials and businessmen; I felt a little out of place!
He gave a wonderful talk; a third of which was about Apollo 16, while the other two-thirds was about his post-Apollo life, becoming a Christian, and the blessing that it has been. It was a very frank and very personal talk. In fact, he described one particular past situation in his life that described me to a tee.
His words have given me food for thought, and over the next few days and weeks, I will be re-evaluating that part of my life, hoping to achieve a better, more positive outcome.
Thank you, Gen. Duke, for your time and good words.
