(To avoid confusion, this topic picks up with the rescheduled event where the prior date's thread left off.) |

Looking forward to the rescheduled event. Good luck Ken! It took a volcano to stop the last one... the odds of that happening could have been worth a fortune at the bookies, if I were a gambling man.

Nick, don't tempt fate! Apparently Irish airspace will be closed again tomorrow due to ash cloud problems (Source: BBC website). |

I never thought I would consider a volcanic eruption to be a lucky break, but it works out nicely for me. I couldn't afford to go to the original event because I was standing in the local election, but I might just be able to go in July.------------------ Please sponsor my parachute jump for the North West Cancer Research Fund. |

Not quite. I would have got in but for a small technicality - most of the voters chose to vote for the other candidates.

The Ed Mitchell visit part one was a very successful evening. A packed room of diners (very good meal Ken), a pleasant positive intro from the man himself. He also posed with guests and signed items freely. By all accounts he was also a hit with local school children and teaching staff earlier today. All of this when he only arrived in the U.K at 08.30 this morning.Well done Ed and Ken. Nice to see cSers Apollo Aileen, Rick Mulheirn and Paul (Bradbury). Looking forward to the lecture tomorrow night. |

Really enjoyed the Ed Mitchell lecture last night. He is a remarkable man and when you consider his age and coming over here after the aborted attempt in April it speaks volumes for him. Also a big thanks to Ken Willoughby for his tenacity in still getting this event on after the volcano eruption [or should it just be classed as an interruption] and the disappointment of the Jim Lovell talk cancellation last October. Full marks to him.Look forward to the next presentation Ken. |

An entertaining lecture complete with PowerPoint presentation and interesting and humourous anecdotes. They sure squeeze in a tight itinerary on these trips; remarkable at any age. Ed will be well on his way home by now. Interesting feature on the Bloodhound SCC priors to Ed's talk too. Ed stayed until every last attendee received an autograph. Well done Ken Willoughby and his many helpers, congrats too to the school for providing an excellent venue. My ears are still bleeding slightly from the volume of the sound system... best wishes for the next event.

The sound system...? Was it Ted Nugent who said 'If it's too loud you're too old'?Seriously (?) on occasions it was blasting out and the music selection did give the impression at times that we had come to a funeral! The presentation was very good and I enjoyed the evening very much. Chance to meet old and new friends as always although 'The Usual Suspects' were a bit thin on the ground. Ed kindly signed for everyone who wanted something (It'll be in the post next week Shane). Big thanks as always to Ken W his helpers and the school for putting the event on and of course thanks to Ed Mitchell for coming over (volcano free this time) to educate and entertain us. |

BIS Fellow Ken Willoughby struck gold once more with the visit to Pontefract of Dr. Edgar Mitchell; Apollo 14 Lunar Module Pilot and the sixth man to walk on the surface of the moon.Postponed from April courtesy of one Icelandic volcano, the welcome was all the more enthusiastic... and grateful! A question and answer session at Halfpenny Lane Junior School on July 1st was followed the next day with visits to Carlton High and finally St Wilfred’s Catholic High School, the venue for the public lecture. In common with the many astronauts Ken has brought over, Dr. Mitchell was charming and accommodating in the extreme. Despite a busy schedule and stifling temperatures he pressed the flesh, chatted, signed autographs and posed for photos with the energy and enthusiasm of a man half his 80 years. For me personally the highlight of the event was a fantastic dinner with Dr. Mitchell and 60 guests on the Thursday evening. A warm introduction from the man himself, mixed with an excellent meal, fine company, photo and autograph opportunities capped off a super evening. The public lecture at St Wilfred was very well attended and judging by the ovation, particularly well received. Nobody who joined the huge queue for a signature at the end of the evening left disappointed. The usual reprobates were there; Andy Green, Steve Proctor, Nick and Bryar Deakin, Aileen, Paul... the list goes on and on. The company of you guys makes these event all the more enjoyable, were that possible! And Shane, Steve did a great job of having your portrait litho signed; you will be delighted. Before we know it, such events will become a thing of the past as these pioneers get older and the practicalities of such visits insurmountable. Some mighty impressive and surprising names for future events were mentioned so might I suggest any enthusiasts living ANY kind of driving, flying or swimming distance from Pontefract make it their business to support Ken Willoughby; you will only regret it if you don't.

A most enjoyable evening. But how many spotted the deliberate mistake(s) in Ed's presentation? |

Quite a few of the mission images were from other missions but they were of secondary importance to what Dr. Mitchell was saying. They served the purpose and at the end of the day... who am I to correct him. |

As Rick has pointed out, a number of images shown during the presentation were from missions other than Apollo 14. Remember, this was a presentation for 'the man in the street' as well as knowledgeable space enthusiasts, and the (non Apollo 14) images used helped illustrate more clearly certain aspects of the mission. For example a shot of the LM lifting off the lunar surface shot from a parked LRV, there wasn't one on 14 of course, but I would imagine the lift off looked the same, hence using that to show the audience. Call it 'artistic licence' I think he's entitled to use it! |

Unless someone came a sat right in front of one blocking off a clear view of Ed and thus denying them an opportunity to take their photos. |

I must complement Ken Willoughby for his tireless efforts over the two days. Previously Ken has worked closely with Carlton High School to put on the public lectures and the presentations there have been very well done.It was the first time Ken has used St Wilfred's; technical and other issues beyond his control contrived to drive his blood pressure up and his remaining locks greyer by the minute, though it is a testimony to his energy that nobody attending the lecture were any the wiser. |

I'll second that. The work that goes on behind the scenes is incredible.Regarding the policeman's helmet - a guest at the dinner on Thursday evening was a police officer and presented Dr Mitchell with it. Anyway, I hope I'll see a few of you here in Scotland for the Charlie Duke events in September. I need the support of my cS buddies! Only 8 weeks to go! |

Very good article by Rick Mulheirn in the September issue of BIS Spaceflight about Ed Mitchell's visit to Pontefract/Featherstone in the UK this July. But why has the BIS relocated these towns to the county of Somerset I wonder? Perhaps they really should get out more from London or was it a typo I wonder? From a puzzled Yorkshireman. |
