Who is up for going to the Space Memorabilia Show at the NASA Glenn Research Center next to the Cleveland International Airport? It is June 17, 10-4 pm. Saw pictures from last year and it looked pretty cool. There is a page on the NASA GRC web site about the show. |

The GRC website about the show is here. Our own site about the show will be debuting later this week. We've added quite a bit this year based on last year's comments from attendees, including special guests, tours, on-site food service and new and more varied exhibitors. Plus, we have a few surprises that we will be announcing as the show approaches... Hope to see everyone there! |

I'll certainly be there! It's just a hop, skip and a long ride down the Indiana Toll Road from here (Fort Wayne, Indiana). Can't miss a chance to see the best author ever to hail from Fort Wayne (Jim Hansen). |

I spotted at the bottom a comment about the fact that only US citizens are allowed on site. Do you know if its possible for non US citizens who happen to live and work over here (and pay taxes!) to submit their passport details etc ahead of time to get clearance? It makes me mad to think how many dollars are wasted on so called 'security'. They'll give me a visa and allow me to own a house, run a major science center, even manage projects paid for with NASA monies.... You know, once I gave NASA HQ six weeks notice, and I still ended up having my meeting in the coffee shop outside. I hope you all feel safer that they're keeping british females out of NASA sites...<grin> seriously, if there is someone at Glenn that will act as the point person to clear non US citizens, let me know. Each Federal agency has different requirements for foreign visitors. It should not be a problem, you just have to get cleared in advance and make sure they don't forget about you. Nag them, basically. In a pinch (if you have no bad intentions), the answer to citizenship question is "US, of course." [This message has been edited by benguttery (edited April 16, 2006).] |

Thank you Tigga for your question about the security requirements with regards to non-US citizens. As of May 2005, security has notified the NASA Glenn Visitor Center that they would no longer have the ability to conduct real-time background checks of foreign nationals either living in or visiting the United States who wanted to come and visit our Visitor Center. This was due to budgetary cuts that have also impacted other operations here. As a result, security has restricted access to the Visitor Center to U.S. citizens only. Under certain circumstances, we can allow non-US citizens to be here at the Visitor Center for official business. That is why Nick Proach Models (a Canadien firm) will be able to exhibit at this event. However, these requirements do not allow us to extend the same courtesy to all non-US citizens who would like to visit our center. I sincerely apologize for any slight that you (or other cS readers who are foreign nationals) feel in our inability to allow you access to our visitor center at this time. Any perceived slight is not our intention, we would be very happy to have you here at this event, but we have to abide by the Center's current security requirements. We are currently working with security to try and rectify this issue so that hopefully we can allow our foreign guests the ability to visit our center in the future. If you have any further questions about this issue, I welcome you to give me a call at the NASA Glenn Visitor Center's main phone number which you can find on our website or you can email me at Michael.Blair@grc.nasa.gov. With regards to another cS reader's comment to just answer "US, of coarse" to the question of citizenship. I am assuming that this person was joking and not seriously suggesting that a non-citizen commit a felony; which may seriously affect a person's ability to retain their visa and stay in this country. We are a research center, which means that we do retain certain proprietary information for the United States, this Agency and our clients who utilize our people and facilities. The NASA Glenn Visitor Center lies within this security perimeter and we operate in cooperation with our security to make our guest's visit as pleasant as possible. Again, if you have any questions about this issue, please feel free to contact me. We value your interest in the space program and our Center and we will do everything we can to make your visit during this and other events as enjoyable as possible.

Less than a week away...who's still going and more importantly...what are you bringing to trade?!?! I'm bringing some magazines from the 50's and 60's that maybe someone can tell me if they are worth anything. Hope to see you all there !!! I'll be the guy with the wife and three kids that keep asking "Are we done yet?" I'm also interested in any reasonably priced plastic model kits. Have a safe trip. |

I am getting excited about the show. It was fun last year and this year should be better with everybody knowing what to expect. I don't have anything that I have dug out of the collection to trade but perhaps I'll go through some things to take along. I hope to get the chance to met a few more collectors from this message board. On a side note. NASA GRC has recently produced a terrific poster that shows every Ohio astronaut on it with a nice space back drop. There is a high res image on the NASA web site but I can not seem to find it. If anyone can submit a link to it, it would be appeciated. A rep from GRC said to do a search for Ohio astronauts - but I still couldn't find it. |

Hi Everyone! Thanks for your interest in the upcoming Space Memorabilia show. We are really looking forward to hosting this event at NASA Glenn with our partner collectSPACE.com and hope that many of you can make it. I thought that I would provide you with a current update for the show. We currently have great variety of exhibitors for this year’s show, many of whom will be displaying and selling space memorabilia. Exhibitors will be located in both the Visitor Center auditorium and exhibits area for all to visit. One of this year’s exhibitors, Nick Proach Models, will be featuring models of the proposed CEV, CLV and CaLV as part of this show. Reservations are going well for the 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. presentations by Dr. James R. Hansen. If you haven’t seen his presentation yet, you are in for a real treat. Dr. Hansen’s presentations and book signing will be held in our Administration Building, across the parking lot from the Visitor Center. Dr. Hansen’s book, “First Man” will be offered for sale to guests by the Visitor Center gift shop and you may also bring your pre-purchased book as well I recommend that you call now for free tickets! If you have tickets for Dr. Hansen’s presentations, we do recommend that you arrive at the Visitor Center at least an hour prior to the presentation, so that you can get through security and pick up your free tickets. We really appreciate the input that we received from participants from last year’s show and Cs readers about how to improve this year’s show. We have added a number of activities for our younger guests to participate in and to start their own collections. A number of exhibitors will have free handouts for kids to collect. We will also be offering “Make & Take” craft activities for the kids, including making rockets and temporary tattoos. Kids (and kids at heart) will also be able to visit with our Graphics Department, who will assist them in making space themed bookmarks. In addition we will have our digital photo-booth available for everyone to participate in. Finally, a new feature we are looking forward to having kids participate in is the interstellar passport scavenger hunt. Kids can pick up a passport at the lobby desk of the visitor center and go to various event destinations to have their passport “stamped.” Once their passport is filled, they can go to the kid’s activity area to pick up a special prize! For all of our guests, we will also be holding hourly drawings for prizes provided by our various exhibitors and NASA History Office. Tickets for the drawing will be free but you do have to be present to win! We will also be offering free tours starting at 10:30 a.m. of our Zero G Facility. Ticket availability for the tour is limited (first come first served) and likely to go fast, so I do recommend coming early to get your tickets. This is just a sampling of this year’s events. We still plan to have a surprise or two for our guests to be announced in the next couple of days. Thanks for your continued interest in space memorabilia. See you in Cleveland!!

I will be bringing some Alan Bean framed art prints, a few signed books, coins and medallions and Gemini Jets scaled metal commercial aircraft models for sale at the show. I will also be brining along a good sampling of meteorites including a lunar piece for display and handouts on meteorites. Finally, I will be bringing along flyers for a new space modeling company QMx which will be producing high end scale models with resin and metal parts. This will be their first public information sheet handed out on the company and their products. [This message has been edited by jeffbassett (edited June 13, 2006).] |

How tight is security at other NASA centres nowadays? In March, 2003, on the morning after hostilities began in Iraq, I visited NASA HQ in Washington DC. I asked to see the library and bookshop and had to sign in, wear a security badge and be accompanied, but they did let me in, and I was able to browse in the library and buy several publications in the bookstore (and the mouse-pad I am leaning on at this moment!) Would that still be allowed for a non-US visitor? Are there any restrictions on non-US visitors to any locations at KSC now? |

Just got back from the show. Had a really good time. They seem to have taken alot of suggestions made from last years show and applied them to today. There seemed to be a very big turn out in the begining and really fizzled out later in the day. The appearance of James Hansen was a great bonus. Enjoyed his presentation. The genuine passion he had for his book and the subject really showed. Door prizes were nice (even if I didn't win.) Unfortunatly the tickets for the zero G facility went to fast for me to get one but over heard several that really liked it. A big thanks to collectSPACE and NASA GRC for offering this event and all the hard work that must have went into this show. Also thanks to everyone who displayed their space related goods. |

Many thanks to Michael Blair of NASA Glenn, and to Robert Pearlman, for their terrific efforts in bringing about this show. NASA implemented many suggestions from last year, and produced a fabulous tour for exhibitors and a great featured guest. I had a fun time at the show.We seemed to have a larger crowd this year than last, although they did not appear to have any enthusiasm for buying artifacts. My total sales were $20, for two spare space shuttle bolts. I think if I exhibit next year it will be just to show artifacts from my collection and give away some items. I definitely enjoy the educational and social aspects of the show, and helping young people get interested in space collecting. But for me at least, financial rewards are quite limited. I'm also a bit proud of the opportunity I had to catch Robert off guard. I overheard him tell someone he didn't have space to pack something. I jumped in and said, "You don't have space? Get Space!" ------------------ John Fongheiser President Historic Space Systems, http://www.space1.com |

On behalf of the staff at the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, I would like to thank our partner, Robert Pearlman (collectSPACE.com), Dr. James R. Hansen, all of this year's exhibitor's and our guests for making this show a success. We were definitely pleased with both the quality and quantity of exhibitors that we had this year and will continue to work with them in improving next year's show. We did have a larger crowd this year, many of whom were pleased with the exhibitors that were on hand. Based on our experience with this year's show, we look forward to hosting the 3rd Annual Space Memorabilia Show next year. |

The show was a pretty good success from my view. We had quite a few people coming by the tables. I sold quite a bit, in fact, took only a third back of what I had brought and much of that was display pieces. I tried to sell expensive as well inexpensive items and a few mid range priced items also. It was so busy I did not really get a chance to eat my NASA provided lunch until about 2:30 at my table. The sandwich was excellent. Everyone working with the show was extremely friendly, hard to find a better mix of vendors and collectors there. NASA could have not have done a better job of welcoming visitors and collectors there. It as super to be able to talk with Michael Blair and other staff as well go through the tour earlier in the week. The kids check stations were great, quite a few kids checking out the tables and asking questions. The temporary post office was wonderful, the people staffing it were as freindly as it gets. Wish they worked at my local postal station. I only regret not getting a chance to sit down for the Armstrong book lecture or a chance to buy one of the autographed books before they left for the day. All in all a super job done by NASA and by Robert in putting this show together again this year. [This message has been edited by jeffbassett (edited June 21, 2006).] |
