Just got back from a very interesting presentation with ISS 1 CDR Bill Shepherd. Capt. Shepherd spoke at the Garden City (Long Island) Cradle of Aviation Museum, where he showed a video of his last mission, answered quite a few questions, and signed autographs for anyone requesting one. Jeez, we need to have a meeting beforehand so we can identify all the cSers. (I think NSS was having a meeting before the lecture.) At the lecture, I was (facing the screen), first row, left hand seat, clutching a box containing Bryan McKay's book, a poster tube with a poster-sized photo of the New Jersey metro area, including New York and Long Island, and frantically scribbling out my story that is due today so all I'd have to do is type it in when I got to work.Forgot this week was a short week with Veterans Day (I took off on Wednesday, too), so I'll add more when I have enough time and also post photos. I asked Capt. Shepherd about the change in patch colors from the US Navy's gold and blue to white and blue and all he said was that someone in NASA wanted it changed. The lecture ended at about 8:45 or so. The moderator said, "Well, with kids having school tomorrow and us older people having to go to bed, Capt. Shepherd will not be signing autographs. However, he will be available in the atrium later for questions, and we have signed photos for all of you on your way out." The photos turned out to be autopenned, and as Rob Wilk found out, even those ran out. Shepherd started signing for kids, then the rest of us, especially for people who didn't get the autopenned photo. However, he would not re-sign the autopen, stating that it was signed already. He thinks "private" humans making it to suborbital flights is realistic. However, "Anyone who rides in SpaceShip One without a pressure suit and something goes wrong is going to have a bad day. I don't think they (SS1's designers) appreciate the risk involved," citing the uncontrolled rolls of the second flight. |

Hart: We (my wife and I) were sitting in the same row, on the opposite side! I also noticed that the photos were autopens...but I had him sign my book "SPACE" by Andrew Chaikin. Forgot my camera, so I'm looking forward to your postings, Hart. Thanks.[This message has been edited by Tom (edited November 12, 2004).] |
