MANHATTAN: A CONCORDE MAY LAND ON INTREPID

British Airways and the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum are negotiating to place a retired Concorde on the deck of the aircraft carrier turned museum. John Lampl, a British Airways spokesman, said, "It would be our desire to have an airplane at the two ends of the main route, and certainly the USS Intrepid would be a great place." Air France has taken the plane out of service, and British Airways plans to do so in October. A Concorde could be floated by barge from Kennedy International Airport to the Hudson River, and hoisted by crane onto the Intrepid at Pier 86, near 46th Street and 12th Avenue. But a long list of museums want Concordes, and British Airways has only seven. The Museum of Flight in Seattle, for example, wants one and so does the Smithsonian's new annex at Dulles Airport near Washington.

...which means it will float right pass my house if they do that :-)

So many museums are bidding for the 12 Concordes. the NASM has its already, and of course Europe will want the majority. What I don't get is why the Museum of Flight- the Boeing Museum- wants one. They were the competition when it was built!

Well, if the Boeing 2707 part mockup still exists (the half fuselage), the Museum of Flight could always display that next to a Concorde....

Hmmmm... what's the disposition of the Tu-144?

Yeah! We want a Concorde in Seattle!

The Mueseum of Flight is just that - flight. Not a museum of Boeing, it's just located at Boeing Field. I still wish the Liberty Bell 7 tour would stop there.

I read that they should have a He-111 there this weekend with the B-17. I might have to go check that out!

The Museum of Flight in Seattle has been promised a Concord for some time and actually is in negatiations right now with BA to acquire one.

On a related note - I flew into Washington-Dulles today. The Air France Concorde that is destined for the Udvar-Hazy center is currently parked at Dulles next to a bunch of construction equipment. Thrilling to see the Concorde, but the circumstances and setting were a downer.

I think I saw that a few years ago at a junk yard near the south enterance of the Kennedy Space Center. It was on display in Orlando at one time. Didn't get to see it then though. But I was driving past, what I think was a space junk yard, there were all kinds of rockets, and such other parts all over the place. Well, I spotted something that made me do a U turn.
Strange looking air craft parts. After looking at what turned out to be the tail section, part of the wing, and some body parts I figured it had to be the mock up of the SST that was in Orlando. I think this is what you were writing about. I sure hated to see it wind up in a scrap yard. The last time I went by, the whole place was cleaned out. It went from total space race clutter to vacant lot. I have no idea where it all went too. Anybody else see this stuff, and know what it was, and were it all went too?

Too bad it never made it!

When I visited the Museum of Flight, they had some sort of Boeing SST..what was that? not the 2707?

Ed,

I seem to remember the space junk yard near KSC was cleared out about a year or two ago. I think everything was auctioned off.

The Boeing SST mockup being discussed here is currently at the Hiller Aviation Museum just south of San Fransisco. The exterior is done and the nose can be raised or lowered. As of last fall, the cockpit instrumentation was complete and was waiting to be installed into the mockup.

This is actually the SECOND Boeing SST mockup. The first was the "yellow" configuration which had a double articulated nose and a swing wing. That mockup was scrapped when the program moved to the "final" red-white-blue delta wing design. This second mockup - the prototype 2707-300 configuration - was the "final" design. Boeing was planning to build two flying prototypes of this configuration but the program was cancelled before they were built.

I am fortunate to have the Chief Engineer's 2707-300 desk model on display in my home for a while. Bill is a friend of mine and still consults on our new airplane team here at Boeing - at 84 years young!

Wasn't there a Boeing SST mockup that ended up in some large church a long time ago? I think I remember reading or seeing something on TV about that once, but I forget all the details.

BA have said that they want to keep one Concorde in a "flying state" - so that it can attend air shows etc.

Early in my career,I worked for a huge computer bureau (largest in Europe at time) and processed structural analysis data for BAe for Concorde wing . Don't recall much elese about it except it used dozens of trays of punched cards and later punched tape and was analysed on a EE KDF-9 computer.

FYI, another Air France Concorde has found its place.

Air France's Concorde, F-BVFB, lands at Baden-Baden Airport near Karlsruhe, southern Germany, Tuesday, June 24, 2003, after leaving Paris' Charles de Galle Airport. The Concorde completed its farewell flight Tuesday, ahead of a journey no supersonic jet has ever taken before- down the Rhine River to a German museum, to which it was donated for a symbolic 1 euro.

So what, one is at the NASM, one at CDG airport, and one in Germany. There were five AF Concordes I believe. There are seven BA Concordes, one presumably at the NASM, one maybe at the Intrepid and another at the Museum of Flight. At least one will remain in the UK I'm sure.
