Should "Sightings" include this ex-flight controller, Sy Liebergot? |

As sightings grew, I found I needed to draw the line somewhere as to who was listed and who wasn't, as it could easily become too wide a net for a lone editor like myself to handle. So the fairest decision was to draw the line at astronauts and cosmonauts (with a special distinction that if it was a space tourist, the only events listed were those where he/she spoke about his/her space flight [to avoid listing rock concerts or movie premieres when such a time that a celebrity flies]).I've balanced that decision by using the message boards and news sections to promote book tours and the like for other space celebrities, such as yourself. I hope no offense is taken, as it certainly wasn't intended. [This message has been edited by Robert Pearlman (edited June 30, 2003).] |

SyDon't be shy let us know. If you are ever in the UK I know a few people who will come knocking on your door. Seriously, I can understand Robert's decision. It is often difficult to choose what to do when you only have a limited amount of time and one pair of hands. Many of us would be interested in knowing where other space related persons are and the obvious place would be News and Events. If someone feels uncomfortable with plugging themselves get the organisers to do it or find a friendly collector. Best wishes Rob Wood |

For Sy and any others who might be reading, please do not mistake my policy about the Sightings calendar for a disinterest in promoting where and when you will be appearing. If you can provide me that information, I will be more than happy to post it to the site. (Sightings, for those curious, is comprised of more than submitted events, but involves about four hours of research daily sorting through newspapers, magazines, wire reports, press releases and websites. That doesn't mean however that Sightings is the only area of the site I concern myself with, as I hope is evident, and additional event information is desired.)

All, I suppose I should respond, as well. I realize that Robert Pearlman had to draw a "Sightings" line somewhere. However, I submit that there are so few Apollo era and earlier Mission Control people that have written books or are even available to the public, that perhaps we are in a special category. Without these few people and their books, a major and intimate part of our space history would be lost. I certainly don't feel self-important, but just responding to heart-felt comments that I have received. I will certainly post any upcoming book signings and radio/TV interviews as they are scheduled. |

.." Gene, you have to understand the CSM is dying!!" Sy ( may I call you Sy?) in terms of accuracy and technological history.. how do you rate the book " Apollo" by Charles Murray? The above quote attributed to you stuck in my mind after reading that book long before the movie made it more famous. Also,as the anniversary of the greatest technological marvel of our time -Apollo 11 comes up I just wish to say thanks to all of you who made it happen. From the guys in the trenches to the Astronauts themselves, from designers to builders to wives and husbands of all who worked on the effort.. from Maxime Faget to Gene Kranz to Sy Liebergot to Christopher Kraft, Werner VonBraun and all the scientists who worked on Apollo 11.. thanks for giving America the greatest event in history! |

John, Of course you can call me by Sy. re Charles Murray's book: "Apollo: Race to the Moon by Charles Murray and Catherine Bly Cox" is THE definitive book about how we got to land humans on the Moon. The astronauts, however brave, were the tip of a very long spear of dedicated engineering, scientific and administrative people that made it all happen and many of whom are accounted for in the book. Mike Collins/A-11 CMP, said in a review of the book that it was very good, "but there were no astronauts in the book." NO KIDDING! There are are a plethora of astronaut books. I count Charles Murray as a friend and I am working on him to republish that wonderful, anecdotal, historical book. |

Based on reader feedback, but mostly due to Sy's interest, I am willing to try expanding Sightings to other NASA personalities. The caveat here is that it will take me a while to tweak my search tools to look for these events, so if you know of them, please let me know by writing sightings@collectspace.com (This extension, at least for now, will be restricted to NASA controllers, flight directors, and key managers (e.g. Sy, Kraft, and Wendt).) |

Thank you, Robert. I realize that this will be extra work for you, but I didn't know that there is a great deal of interest in how we "ground guys" did our jobs. |
