It is with sadness I pass along word of the death of Carmine Torrisi, Space Topic Study Unit member and former secretary, on Aug. 12, 2018. He was 71.

Perhaps those who knew him through the Space Unit or as a fellow collector can share their memories of him here.

Carmine Torrisi was a real gentleman and will be sorely missed. I knew him for forty years and worked with him for the past nine and he would give you the shirt off his back. RIP

Carmine used to organize a space cover swap meet in NYC. They were great times and often we'd end up over at his house to eat dinner. A great host, great collector, and a great guy...

Unfortunately, I don't recall meeting Carmine, but we did have some space cover correspondences during the shuttle program years. I knew he had been quite active in the swap meets in the NYC area and was a former officer of the Space Unit.

It's always sad to hear of a fellow space cover collector and Space Unit member leaving us, but he's now "at home" in a space heavenly kingdom high above us.

I am very sad to hear of the passing of Carmine Torrisi. He was always very helpful to me when I was Editor of the Astrophile. He was often at meetings of the IASP at the Queens Science Center and at many of the ASDA shows in NYC. Carmine is already missed by the Space Unit. — Bill York

Although I met with Carmine on a half dozen occasions I didn't really know him very well socially. But our emails to each other about space topics was always enjoyable. He took an active role in the Space Unit and helped us who were members grow into enjoying this lifetime hobby. RIP
