When I was young, I remember having some very rigid, two-piece screw down covers for rare baseball cards. A kind of lucite-type case, but in two halves. Is there such a thing out there for covers?

Hopefully not. Everything seems to be "slabbed" these days. For investors having coins and baseball cards encased seems understandable. Lately individual stamps are being encapsulated. You can no longer put them in an album or include them in a philatelic exhibit. All you can do is shuffle them like a deck of playing cards. Are covers next?

I personally have a few very rare covers I would love to have in a hard case so I can display them without the worry of someone handling them or an accidental ding when moving them. I love to display my collection and every few months I change out artifacts to keep it interesting. Most of my covers are very common and I have no worries with these as they are easily replaceable.

I have a few signed covers that I would love to be able to show off, ship, travel with, or something of this nature, but don't since they are so delicate and damage prone. I don't so much mind the encapsulations for handling purposes, but I don't want to pay for a third party authentication since I know their authenticity without question.

PSA offers custom encapsulation with a non-authentication "green label," but I also wouldn't want to draw authenticity questions just because I didn't pay PSA to do it.

I have never seen a PSA encapsulation, Can they be removed from the package or is it a sealed permanent encapsulation?

The PSA/DNA encapsulated items look like this:

It is an option with their authentication service, but there is also a green label version for "custom" encapsulation without authentication. I've never tried to open one, but I think the item can be removed without damaging it, but I don't think it will reseal. Maybe someone can chime in on that.

What I was hoping to find was something like this:

There are recesses the size of a sports card on the inside, then you screw it down and you essentially have a protective lucite case. It seems like the US size 6 covers are pretty common with collectors, I would imagine there is something out there in this size. I did find some 5x7 photo screw down cases which would fit, I suppose, but they were not recessed, which could theoretically lead to damage, and they are made of polystyrene and I'm not aware of this as an archival quality material.

All times are CT (US)
