I have recently unearthed a number of covers that were sent to me in 1960-61 from Wallops Island Va. They were sent out, I am told, by the Wallops Island Postmaster who documented early NASA rocket trials (Nike-Cajun, Scout, Aerobee, Little Joe VI and others) on cacheted covers.

I have just started my research and would appreciate any information on this practice. Is there interest or a market for these covers?

As with all covers, the collector interest in a cover resides with the specific event documented — the Little Joe and satellite launches will have a higher interest than the "typical" Nike-Cajun sounding rocket launch. International events also tend to be more popular such as US/Japan or US/France launch.

You are correct that the Wallops Island postmaster — William Hudson — was the servicer for these events.

I would like to know who William Hudson is?

He signed my cover for the first flight of the Scott rocket from Wallops Island, Va., July 1, 1960. Thank you for any help.

Your post was moved and merged with this thread as Hudson is identified above.

The SCOUT (rather than Scott) launch vehicle, or Solid Controlled Orbital Utility Test, was America's first solid-fuel launch vehicle capable of orbiting a satellite.

The first SCOUT was launched from Goddard's Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, Va., on July 1, 1960. The rocket carried a 193-pound (88-kilogram) payload as a probe test. On February 16, 1961, Scout became the first solid-fuel rocket to place a payload into orbit. The vehicle carried a 96-pound (44-kilogram) NASA atmospheric physics payload into orbit without incident.

All times are CT (US)
