I recently purchased a group of Soviet space fight covers. Nothing special, just some normal covers I was thinking of using for through-the-mail autographs. One of the covers caught my eye after I had received it.This Soyuz 30 cover is that cover. I have another one in my collection that I bought as "possibly flown" as it has the Salyut 6 spacemail cancel on it. This cover appears to have the same stamp, but the date is really odd in it (it doesn't look like a full date). Is this also a "flown" spacemail stamp on this cover? I know that many of these items were stamped on Earth after the stamp was returned from Salyut 6 so there is no way to know what was really flown and what was not, but is this the flown stamp?

This is not a flown cover. The stamps were issued one day after Soyuz 30 launch - July 27, thus they could not be flown (at least not aboard this mission). The cancellation "Space Mail" with the date format -5-778 is Moscow Mezhkniga postmark for souvenir covers. The flown "Space Mail" postmark should bear 010778 date. There are some covers that have the date 050778 and were created on Earth very much look like "flown" and have the USSR-Poland flight stamps. | |
