I have just been informed that the founder of the Space Unit, Les Winick, died on March 5, 2015. His obituary is here.
...his love of philately grew and his passion became promoting the hobby of stamp collecting. He wrote about stamps for Linns for 28 years, the Chicago Tribune for 6 years, was syndicated in over 200 newspapers and published a numerous other publications. He was a founding member of the Park Forest Stamp Club, a former President of the Collectors Club of Chicago, and the Executive Director of Ameripex '86. He traveled the world as a exhibitor, judge, commissioner, and consultant for stamp shows, and won numerous awards.

I thought this was "already here" on collectSPACE somewhere, maybe not. I was truly surprised.

Very few people have done more for "space" collecting than Les, and I am proud to be able to call him a friend, as I can call so many others friends, from the field.

Well said Dave! I can't think of hardly anyone else that has done more for astrophilately than Les Winick has. He goes back to the pioneering days of space cover and stamp collecting.

It was during the later Apollo era that Les and I started to know each other, and we were able to cover a shuttle landing together during the late 1980's. A visit that I can still well remember as it was a pleasure and honor in working with Les during that coverage.

He will be missed and astrophilately owes him a lot for his dedication and hard work throughout the decades as one of the true pioneers of space philately.

Les Winick was a founder of this hobby. Does anyone have any memories of Les that they would like to share?

I had been collecting space covers for only about three years in mid-1972 when I sent Les a letter telling him that my family and I were coming up to Chicago (where I came from) and would like to meet him. He invited me to come by with my family.

When we got there he had invited about a dozen other space cover collectors to his home, had a meal prepared for all of us. Ted Parge showed me his complete collection of SpaceCraft covers. He had an indoor/outdoor pool and a few took advantage of that. It was a great gathering for me, someone he didn't even know at the time.
