On 22.09.1935 at 16:35 Uhr William Sykora launched his first mail rocket at Holmes Airport in Astoria, Long Island. Soon afterwards the engine rocket of this steel-rocket exploded. Only 28 of 250 covers were recovered. They all were more or less damaged. Parts of the rocket hurt a visitor. Sykora prepared for this flight rocket stamps in carmine and blue. These rocket stamps have green fingerprints on their back. These rocket stamps were printed in sheets of four. Another series of similar rocket stamps exist having smaller space between each other. The windows in the upper floors are not as exactly as on the rocket stamps which were actually used. Does any cS'er know, whether this second series was printed before or after rocket flight? Does anybody of you have any biographical data on William Sykora? I only learned that he leaded International Cosmos Science Club in New York till 1937. | |
