I'm looking at my covers — some have addresses written on them in pencil.I collect covers for the purpose of getting them signed. If I were to erase the addresses, that would give them a larger area on the front to sign (it's already a pretty tight space), which would really help on the covers I want to get multiple signatures on. But, at the same time, it feels a bit like "cheating" and defacing. What do y'all think? Do you erase pencil addresses on your covers? |

Usually prefer unaddressed covers. When producing them during the shuttle era used removable labels when sending them through the mail. Of course if the addressee was someone recognizable that was a bonus. Otherwise, almost always erase the penciled-in addresses with no regrets. |

I've done both. If the pencil address is fairly light, it should erase just fine. If the address is pretty heavily penciled-in, it won't erase well and will still show on the cover (less desirable in my book). |

This is not "cheating." Erase pencil addresses whenever possible. |

Use an art eraser rather than the eraser that is on the pencils - cleans easier and "softer" on the envelope. |

For some erasing addresses is like cleaning coins. It might seem like the thing to do but I would advise that you think twice. An address can suggest that an envelope has been through the mail stream which may be of significance to you in the future if you choose to exhibit. Many (most) space event covers were obtained by hand back service (cancelled at the post office but not sent through the mail) or sent bulk in other envelopes. I use to look for unaddressed but now prefer postally used. If your purpose is an attractive canvas for a space related autograph by all means erase the address. If you aren't sure I suggest you refrain. |

While the European collectors wanted addressed covers, the US collectors used pencil addresses or peelable labels with the intent to erase or remove the labels.Although the MOJ states that astrophilately is the collecting of "mailed envelopes" that was picked up from aerophilately and never corrected, but I expect to see the MOJ delete the mailed statement with the next edition as I've been tasked with reviewing the MOJ for astrophilately. Only about half the covers that I have went through the mail. If erasing a pencil address helps get a better AU, my opinion is to go ahead and improve the cover. |
