I have been collecting commemorative covers and 'local post' sheets from the 'Space City Cover Society'. I have been all over the net, with several search engines, and I can't find a list of the covers they produced, or a proper history of the society. Can anyone help me out?

If not, I intend to put a list together of all the items I have (on Excel). If anyone has any of these items I could send them the list and they could let me know of any items they have which were not already listed. That way all those interested could build a list ourselves.

Try writing:
Space City
PO Box 36192
Houston TX 77236
I purchased several of the Space City Cover Society covers from them last year. I think they are the ones that produced these covers.

At the time they sent me a couple for sale lists of the various Apollo program covers they had left (event covers, FDC.) I expected to get more lists from them but never did. It may be best to send an SASE.

I do not think they have anything on the net.

If you get a reply, post the results if positive. Good Luck —

I have many of there FDCs (the common ones), if you want a list just let me know.

Thanks for the info - I'll try writing to them

If this fails then we can try and put a list together ourselves.

Has anyone complied a catalogue of the Space City Cover Society NASA Local Posts? I have many in my collection including full sheets as well as NASA Local Post covers.

Does anyone have information on the number of sheets and or covers produced?

Currently looking for full sheets of the 35 Space Shuttle Astronaut Candidates (JAN 16 1978) - I have the 35 covers.

Anything in back issues of Astrophile? If not it would be a good subject to cover again.

There were two articles in the Astrophile about NASA Local Posts that gave some sort of listings of the various covers and sheets, for Mercury Gemini and Apollo but nothing on the Space Shuttle.
  • see Vol 45 no. 254, Jan/Feb. 2000 (part 1)
  • and Vol 45 no. 255, Mar/Apr. 2000 (part 2)
I wasn't aware of the sheets and covers for the 35 Space Shuttle Astronaut Candidates, but I stopped collecting these NASA Local Posts after the Apollo flights.

Joe, that was before my time in ATA. Will check the ATA Space Unit website.

Does anyone have the back issues discussed?

While we are on the subject of NASA Local Post (LP), I would like to mention that there is a fairly new CD catalog available on USA/Canada local posts, of which the NASA LP is included, covers and sheets are illustrated (but no quantities).

Information on this CD can be found here and if you need more info you can contact them at enquiries@pabay.org.

Harry Anderson, who did the Space City Cover Society covers is still with us. I don't know if he recorded numbers of covers that he made, but he might be your best bet. He's still making covers for the current private space launches and just ran an ad in Linn's this week. You can write him at:

A big thank you to everyone who responded!

John, I will email you and will return the issues if you need them back.

By the way, anyone else got the 35 new astronaut cover set? Just got them at NAPEX! Now to find the stamp sheetlets.

Big thank you to John for sending me the Astrophile pages. Dennis, I will send a letter to Space covers.

The article stops at the end of Apollo, and I have all the sheets for Skylab.

Have seen NASA local posts up to 1981 on some STS flights. Last one is on for STS-1 April 12, 1981. Anyone seen them past that date?

Just an update that I received the CD set of local stamp issues frpom Island of Pabay Scotland and it lists all the sheetlets and FDC and covers for NASA Local post. It includes about 32 pages of photos and listings.

Found the sheetlets for the 35 Astronaut Candidates listed (actual four different sheetlets. Looks like they ended in 1982.

Would be interesting to get the numbers produced (covers and sheetlets). Any other information would be appreciated.

Looks like these intact sheetlets must be pretty scarce! Thank you for all your help.

I am looking for historical information on the NASA Local Post (NLP)/Space City Cover Society (SCCS) relating to the local posts (Lo-Po's) that were produced. I am trying to confirm that the last "Lo-Po's" that were produced were for the STS-3 mission in March of 1982.

I had been under the assumption that NLP/SCCS went out of business sometime shortly after March of 1982, however I have discovered "Non Lo-Po" SCCS covers cancelled from 1983 to 1992. So it would seem that SCCS was still in business, but NLP was not. Anyone know when NLP or SCCS actually went out of business?

I have created a website on the NLP/SCCS "Lo-Po's" where you can find lists and documents that I have compiled on NLP/SCCS, but I am still missing a lot of data.

Anyone have SCCS covers past 1992? Anyone have any issues of "Space Log" produced by SCCS past 1981?

Any help or information would be helpful and appreciated.

Great website with much useful information. I can confirm that SCCS were still producing covers in the mid 1980s. I have just under 30 SCCS covers from STS-51L. I've emailed a couple of examples to your webmaster and would be happy to scan the others and send them to you. I also found a website that indicates that they were still producing covers for the 25th anniversary of Apollo 11 in 1994.

Hope that helps.

The Space City Cover Society and me.

Back in the mid 1980's I was getting covers from them for each Space Shuttle mission. Something happen around 1984-1985 and no orders were never filled or returned. I had about 10 that were never sent to me.

I went to my bank and was told it would cost me more than the value of the check to stop payment. So with that I wrote off the checks. I did write to them and never got a reply.

Well one day in 2003 I got a package from Texas. and inside were all of my order slip and my checks and most of the covers I had ordered, but these were now free to me. Someone had died in SCCS and the courts got involved and my orders were put aside for about 18 years.

I saw the return address from Texas and opening the package I found my covers. After that I wrote back to thank them and to order more (this time no check) and never got a reply. That's what I know about SCCS...

The owner and operator of SCCS, Harry Anderson, had passed away a few years ago. The society's address is no longer valid as no one else took over for him.
