in this ebay lot 270139472077 and another it references, the USAF rocket in the cachet is on the right side. I have two examples and both show the rocket on the left side of the cachet. Also the Oct. 13, 1960 Port Canaveral hand cancel post marks on my covers are not as clearly defined and are much thicker in general than the lot noted above. I'd appreciate some information about this cachet and the hand cancel. Thank you.

The version shown in the eBay lot is suspected of being postmarked a year after the flight (Space Unit "Suspect Space Covers" p. 7.2). Note the postmark looks like "1961" only the last 1 has been rounded out to a zero. The seller calls this a postal error. Probably an anniversary cover that was altered.

The other telltale is that the legit Sally/Amy/Moe covers have a Port Canaveral postmark that is somewhat worn and fuzzy looking (like what you described in your collection). The Port C hand cancel device was getting pretty worn at that point in time and was replaced with a new one in approx March, 1961 (ref: Wilhelm Katalog Mercury p.40). If you note, the item on eBay has a nice, crisp looking hand cancel, done by the new cancelling device, hence done after March, 1961.

The difference in cachets that you noted is a new one to me, and quite interesting. Possibly another tell-tale. The legit version in my collection has the rocket on the left side as you describe yours. The suspect version in "Suspect Space Covers" has the rocket on the right, like the suspect one on eBay. Could be a trend...

Note too that the same seller has a 1960 dated version of this cover with the new, crisp postmark (eg - probably backdated) and the rocket on the right side (ebay item 270139473041). Maybe the rocket on the right side is a definer of bad versions of this cover(?).

Hi Dennis. I obviously need those references in my collection as well. Your response was very helpful and interesting. Thanks.

Hi Garry - The "Study of Suspect Space Covers" is available on CD from the Space Unit for (I think) $10. Contact Carmine Torrisi at the e-mail addy in the front cover of your Astrophiles for details.

The Wilhelm Katalog Mercury (he also issued catalogs on Gemini and Apollo) may be more problematic since Mr. Wilhelm has passed away. Anyone know if/how these may still be available?

Hello Gary,
Cost of the CD is as follows:
For non-members $14.00 postpaid to USA and Canadian addresses and $17.00 airmail to other countries. Space Unit members receive a $2 discount. See http://stargate.1usa.com/stamps/publish.htm for cost of this CD plus other SU publications.

You may want to contact Florian Noller about the Wilhelm catalogue.

We've been chosen by Peter's wife to continue the sale of these great catalogs.
They are completely bilingual in English and German.

Contact me off-group for further information.
