New Space Postmarks Honor Challenger

According to the USPS Postal Bulletin, this weekend the Rubber City Stamp Club will hold an exhibition in Akron, Ohio. The two postmarks shown here will be in use at the two-day show.

For those who cannot be at the show, the USPS has extended the date that the postmarks will be available by 30 days.

Send your stamped addressed envelopes to the address above. Ask for the "Rubber City Stamp Club Exhibition Challenger postmarks." Include a large stamped addressed envelope, if you want the covers protected from damage in the mail.

If your covers do not have a cachet, I will apply the two NASA graphics cachets shown here (in black ink) to your covers for free.

Send ANY uncacheted shuttle covers with a large stamped addressed return envelope to:

Bill York, 30 Park Ave. (20P), New York, NY 10016

When writing, mention if you are a member of the Space Unit or not. While supplies last, I will include a free space cover or space patch in all return envelopes.

Good Collecting!

Bill York

The fact that is mentioned that the deadline to obtain these cancels has been extended by 30 days actually means that we now have 60 (!) days to obtain these cancels.

The standard grace period for pictorial postmarkers is 30 days already.

There are also cacheted covers:
"This year a specially cacheted pictorial cover will be available that commemorates the 20th anniversary of the death of West Akron native Judy Resnik in the Challenger space shuttle explosion. The card will be cancelled with a special show cancel for each of the two exhibition days. The covers are priced at $2 each for a stamped, cachet-cancelled cover with a regular stamp. There also will be only 10 covers with the express mail Challenger stamp for $8 each. Please enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope for all orders. For further information, write to the Rubber City Stamp Club, P.O. Box 1721, Akron, OH 44309-1721.".

It is to be noted that it is UNUSAL for ONE event....this a stamp show...to have TWO DIFFERENT pictorial postmarks....even though they are for different dates.

The first postmark is a little odd...it makes it appear as if Nov. 11, 2006 was the 20th Anniversary of the Challenger loss.

Obviously, we know the 20th Anniversary was on January 28, 2006...but the postmark is a little confusing in it's intention.

The two rubber stamp cachets below will be applied to any amount of covers or blank envelopes (in black only) sent to the following address:

Bill York, 30 Park Ave. (20P), New York, NY 10016

Specify which cachet to apply. Also mention if you are a member of the Space Unit or if you were a member of the IASP.

A large envelope, with sufficient postage to return the covers, should be included with your covers.

There are now four cachets in this Cachet Service.

WOW! That was fast. I sent six covers for the two Challenger cancels on Nov. 20th. Today, Nov. 27th, I received them back with perfact postmarks, thanks to the postal workers at the Akron, OH post office.

Shown here are the two Challenger postmarks from Akron, Ohio. The cachets have been applied in black.

I am experimenting with red ink for the cachets. NASA usually applies their official cachets in light blue (sometimes dark blue).

Shown here is the fifth shuttle cachet in the free Cachet Service. This shuttle cachet is 3 1/2 inches high.

Send your covers or blank envelopes (with stamp addressed envelope) to:

Bill York, 30 Park Ave., New York, NY 10016

Computer-generated stamps sometimes show various symbols of America. Mt. Rushmore was on one that I recently received in the mail.

Computer-generated stamps with a space theme do exist, but I have not seen any of them. Has anyone seen such stamps with a space theme? If so, scan them for all Collect Space members and enter them on this thread.

There has already been a number of space generated stamps using services like Zazzle.com for US postage. The ones I've seen have been on shuttle related flights - either crew photos or mission emblems - and used on the flight dates (e.g. launch, docking with ISS, landing, etc.). Here is an example from a completed listing from eBay:

SPACE SHUTTLE STS-115 Zazzle Dual Cancel Cover Item number: 320052708556
from Therome Cachets

Also there have been X-pane related stamps created for the pictorial X-plane cancel from Edwards AFB last summer. I believe these have been on eBay as well.

Bill--Yes, I've already started using computer-generated space theme-photo postage stamps (2 varieties) a few shuttle missions ago. I'll have images of the crew, launch, an EVA, space station, and landing for the upcoming STS-116/Discovery flight next week. So far, the "new" look for the space postage-stamp use on many of my cachet covers is quite popular with space center workers, collectors, and Space Age enthusiasts. I'll send you a few for possible scans that you may want to include with this topic thread. If anyone else is interested in ordering them from my company, let me know (email or post here).

Shown here is another cachet that will be applied free to any covers or blank envelopes that are sent to the following address (include a large SASE for return of the covers):

Bill York, 30 Park Ave. (20P), New York, NY 10016

This cachet shows a Mercury capsule. It will be applied in either black or red. This is not a postmark and will not be applied to stamps. It is only a decoration for a space cover, as are all cachets.

This cachet was very popular at stamp shows because it is easy to apply. It is 1 1/4" wide. At one time the IASP had over 30 cachets in its Cachet Service. Over the years, many of them were lost at stamp shows.

Those who send covers for any of the above six free cachets will receive a free space cover or space patch while supplies last.

Apparently, the USPS is no longer releasing their Postal Bulletins on a bi-monthly basis. The last issue was released on 21 Dec 06. Tomorrow it will be one month. Either they changed to a monthly basis for the PDF publication or they discontinued publishing it. If they are still publishing the Postal Bulletin, the next issue will have a great deal of information in it on space postmarks.

Astro Bill - change the year in the web address from 2006 to 2007. The USPS classifies them by year. There has been at least two published in 2007 as they are published bi-weekly.

You will have to tell Dr. Ross Smith about that. I used the link to the USPS Postal Bulletin on the Space Unit website. I do not recall making that change last year.

Has anyone actually received their covers back with the FLOREX postmark? It has been weeks since I sent my covers (4 Dec 06).

Thanks for the tip. I have made the change to 2007 in the USPS website for the Postal Bulletin. There were two issues so far this year and there were no space postmarks listed.

Nope. Not yet. But I'm not overly worried. US post offices often take three months to return covers submitted for cancellation. That's rather the rule than the exception.

I am glad to report that my optimism was justified - the Florex covers have just returned to me.

Alas, the inner part of the circular datestamp is incomplete on all the covers I had sent in.

I received my FLOREX covers in the mail today. The USPS did a great job. They returnrd my four covers in a very large envelope along with my original request and SASE.

Shown here is the FLOREX postmark dated 1 Dec 2006. I have applied an appropriate shuttle cachet to the cover.

Shown here is a closeup of the FLOREX cancel.
