I just got a Christmas card from Edwards AFB cachet designer Philip Dockter, and it had a cool new Edwards postmark on it, designed by Philip himself. Thought you'd like to see it: http://pic17.picturetrail.com/VOL846/454068/586514/122726513.jpg [This message has been edited by collectSPACE Admin (edited December 24, 2005).] [This message has been edited by micropooz (edited December 25, 2005).] |

Very impressive. What are the types of aircraft we can see here?I recognize the XB-70/Valkyrie, the SR-71, the YB-49 Wingless Aircraft. Any others? ------------------ Jürgen P Esders Berlin, Germany http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Astroaddies |

At the top are the X-1 and the X-15, not sure of the one inbetween them. This was first used on 10/22 and 10/23 for the Edwards air show. These were "fixed date" cancel devices .... since then Edwards received an additional device with a changeable date. This is replacing the old pictorial used showing the shuttle. |

Yeah, actually I think the one between the X-1 and X-15 is the D-558-II Skyrocket. Regardless, still a cool cancel.

Al, I think Jürgen meant YB-49s or some other flying wings are on the right of the postmark. And I would guess F/A-22 rather than YF-22 as YF-22 had sharp tip and long pitot tube Karel |

Absolutely, I meant "flying wing" and no "wingless". That makes it an ideal postmarker to be used on a cover that can ultimately be signed by many test pilots. Also, the recent stamps of the "Advances in American Aviation" series which are still on sale are excellent stamps to be used in this context. My covers are off to the post office there .... ------------------ Jürgen P Esders Berlin, Germany http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Astroaddies |

Yes I knew it was a typo jerguen, I wasn't criticizing. As for the X-2/D-558, I thought at first the D-558, but to settle it I just emailed Phil Docktor, the postmark creator. Cheers and MERRY CHRISTMAS! Al |

OK - I just got through emailing with Phil - he says he intended it to be the X-2, but as he says, it sure looks like it could be the D-558 also! The silhouette is so similar.Phil is a huge X-2 fan and Pete Everest was one of his biggest hero's so I thought it might've been. And he indicated, the YF-22. At least that was his intent. That small he did wonderfully gettng the shapes the way he did. Phil is not only an outstanding cover maker, cancel designer and everything else, but a fantastic person and a great friend. |
