A few years ago, I attended an event where Bill Phillips (the aviation artist who painted the 20 USPS stamps depicting the history of flight)was signing stamps for the public. This was held in his hometown of Ashland, Oregon. Being a long time collector of his art (and knowing that the local Postmaster was going to have a booth set up) I made up several sets of stamped cards. The postmark was something custom designed by Bill. Note, it was not the "First Day of Issue" ceremony...just something for local friends and fans. Anyway, it was my understanding that this postmark was used for one day only. I know this fact, because the Postmaster was so impressed with the cards which I had made up, he asked me for enough blanks to make up a set for himself. That's when hew stated that he had to do it that day as the rubber stamp would be destroyed at the conclusion of the event. So I hope that we'll truly have 30 days to obtain cancellations of the grand opening. Dennis |

Dennis- be assured that you have 30 days after the date of the cancellation to mail in requests. you can go to usps.com website click on publications, click on postal bulkliten, click on philately link and scroll down to pictorial cancellations. you will see in the introduction that you have 30 days to mail in your request for the cancellation even if it is used only one day. I know this because I'm a USPS employee and also collect space related cancellations. The rubber stamp cancellations are not destroyed until at least 30 days after event in case USPS needs to replaced damaged envelopes. sometimes if cancellation was not fully publicized a 60 or 90 day extension is granted [This message has been edited by astpexhibitor (edited December 11, 2003).] [This message has been edited by astpexhibitor (edited December 11, 2003).] |

for the Centennial of Flight cancellations appropiate stamp to use would be the Centennial of Flight commemorative. If your post office doesn't have any, you can order from usps.com. I received my order 5 days after placing it for only $1 shipping . order was sent priority mail.
