A United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V is set to launch the National Reconnaissance Office's (NRO) NROL-61 satellite, in support of national defense, on Thursday (July 28) from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

Though past classified NRO launches has featured flight patches with sometimes fantastic iconography, this mission is different. This launch has a mascot, "Spike." From the NRO on Twitter:

Meet Spike, #NROL61 mascot scheduled to launch on a @ulalaunch #AtlasV from @45thSpaceWing on July 28, 2016.

In addition to appearing on a patch and poster (here), Spike is also appearing in a series of NRO comics:

Spike gets into shape for his #AtlasV rocket ride from @45thSpaceWing (CCAFS) on Thursday morning. #NROL61

All times are CT (US)
