In March 2015, U.S. astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko will begin collaborative studies on the International Space Station (ISS). They will reside on the ISS for a year, twice as long as a typical station expedition.
As part of the yearlong mission, NASA has selected 10 investigations to conduct with identical twin astronauts Scott and Mark Kelly. These investigations will provide broader insight into the subtle effects and changes that may occur in spaceflight as compared to Earth by studying two individuals who have the same genetics, but are in different environments for one year.
Artists Tim Gagnon (cS: KSCartist) and Jorge Cartes (cS: KAPTEC) worked the lead project scientist Craig Kundrot to design a patch for the Twins Study. Tim explains:
The challenge was to illustrate all of the investigations that will be conducted by the participating principal investigators from the universities and organizations involved. I know I speak for Jorge when I say that we are proud to have met that challenge.
