Celebrating 50 Years Of Human Space Exploration

50 years ago this month, a man was launched into orbit for the first time. We salute Yuri Gagarin because it took a lot of courage to be the first. The flight of Vostok 1 was the beginning of "the Space Race" an era where thousands of people around the world strived to explore the final frontier for national prestige. 30 years ago today without the benefit of unmanned test flights, two courageous pilots launched aboard a new ship, the Space Shuttle. Thank you Yuri, Alan, John and Bob for having "The Right Stuff" to lead the way.

Born in an era of competition, the space shuttle program taught us how to launch, service and build incredible machines and how to work together. Today those two nations that began it all along with 13 other international partners cooperate aboard the International Space Station to build a foundation for new explorations to come. Let's hope the next fifty years are as exciting as the last.

To mark this anniversary I am pleased to announce that two of my commemorative patches are orbiting the Earth.

I am also pleased to unveil two new designs to commemorate the end of the Space Shuttle era. I have had the pleasure to come to know many "space shuttle workers". My admiration for their service is absolute. I have been fortunate to play a small role and will cherish those memories forever. The emotions are a combination of pride and sadness so it was impossible to capture that range in one design.

The first patch is titled: "America's Pride". It is a beautiful, colorful design that showcases the two most notable accomplishments of the shuttle program, the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station.

The second patch is titled: "Farewell... and Thank You". More subdued, it shows an orbiter pulling away from the ISS, it's RMS "arm" in salute to all those who made it possible.

I am offering these two new shuttle commemoratives for sale. Please download, complete and return your order form by April 30th. My goal is for these patches to be in your hands by the time STS-135 launches. After April 30th you will need to contact your online retailer.

Tim, two super patches - sent you an order from Scotland for two set this morning. I included $15 shipping as for one set. If not enough, please let me know.

"Farewell... and Thank You" is absolute class and a very fitting Farewell it is.

Very great patches. Seeing these makes me a bit sad. I wasn't around for Apollo or any of that. I grew up with the shuttle.

Two wonderful patches, honouring the end of the longest running space program, congratulations Tim! Both are "must haves" for my collection. I hope they can be ordered from thespacestore.com or from spaceboosters.uk...

Thanks for the kind words. The patches have just arrived from the embroidery company today. I'll be working over the next week to fill orders.

Tonight I'll watch NASA TV as the orbiter is rolled to the pad for the last time. While I am proud of the accomplishments of our shuttle program I'm still sad to see it end.

The patches will be available from the Space Store.

Tim, I purchased your two shuttle program tribute patches "America's Pride" and "Farewell & Thank You" at Spacefest III. They are both beautiful patches. I also bought the STS-135 patch. I told the two young girls at the Space Store booth that I'd been buying shuttle mission patches far longer than they had been alive and that this [135] patch was the last one I would ever buy. They seemed to share my melancholy, if only for a moment.

The two pieces of patch artwork above "America's Pride" and "Farewell... and Thank You" do no justice to the real patches. They are very impressive. Thanks.
