I too was able to do one too. I now have a lovey display with a cover and uncovered patch. Thanks to you for the how-to.

And after I recently received a set, I decided to buy an "extra" GT-5 patch just for this purpose. I mean really, how can you be serious about collecting these little gems to the point of buying one of these wonderful sets and NOT honor GT-5 by not having both versions of the patch (as the crew did originally)?

If you look at the history of this patch, they flew with it covered because they had to and then uncovered it upon landing. If I recall correctly, Cooper said something at the time to the effect that being just 103 minutes short of "8 days or bust" was "close enough" and then uncovered his!

I too have a set of these excellent patches, and hope to put up a nice wall display with them.

A question for those already displaying or planning to: Many here on cS have used the GT-3 Molly Brown and GT-4 McDivitt-approved patches as part of their displays. But shouldn't an American flag of the style used on Gemini suits also be put up, as the Gemini 4 crew stated that would be their crew patch?

It could get crowded on any collector's wall display, what with the covered/ uncovered Gemini 5 patches, the blue/black Gemini program insignia etc. A happy problem for any space fan!

Personally I was considering trying to find an American flag to display with mine. One thing to remember: Their American flag was not embroidered. Does anyone know the approximate size and material?

Here is a good photo of Buzz Aldrin's American flag that he wore during Gemini 12. It appears to basically be a small desk flag.

I finally received my set today. Very, very nice patches, although I don't like how they mounted them to the informational cards. The backing on a few of mine were damaged in the process of removing them. I'm glad I at least have a huge roll of iron-on backing, so I can repair them.

I've been told they produced a new run after the original sold out. I don't believe this was ever designated as a limited edition.

A second and third production run was made during May and June 2011 for the Gemini 5 through to Gemini 12 patches. The first, second and third production runs are as follows;

First;

  • Gemini 5 - 4.2" round 128431 ---- 09. 10. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 6 - 4" wide x 3.5" high hexagon 129303 ---- 09. 10. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 7 - 3.3" round 141255 ---- 09. 10. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 8 - 3.2" round 141265 ---- 09. 10. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 9 - 4" wide x 3" high 142070 ---- 09. 10. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 10 - 3.1" round x 4" at the widest points 142951 ---- 09. 10. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 11 - 3" wide x 4.3" high 144744 ---- 09. 10. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 12 - 3.1" round 144745 ---- 09. 10. 14 (China)
Second and third production runs are the same sizes as above;
  • Gemini 5 - 128431 ---- 05. 11. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 5 - 128431 ---- 06. 11. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 6 - 129303 ---- 05. 11. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 6 - 129303 ---- 06. 11. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 7 - 141255 ---- 05. 11. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 8 - 141265 ---- 05. 11. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 9 - 142070 ---- 06. 11. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 10 - 142951 ---- 05. 11. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 11 - 144744 ---- 05. 11. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 11 - 144744 ---- 06. 11. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 12 - 144745 ---- 05. 11. 14 (China)
  • Gemini 12 - 144745 ---- 06. 11. 14 (China
All the first production run sold out within a month.

All the above patches were sold mounted onto a black information card and sealed with a second information card in a cellophane packet.

For the Gemini 8 patch the second card had the wrong launch date of December 4, 1965. A corrected card with March 16, 1966 was produced and included separately, loose from the sealed packet for some of the first production run. Later the December 1965 card was removed and replaced with the March 1966 card.

In the description for Gemini 6 through to Gemini 12 the AB Emblem website says; "This series is not currently being manufactured and will be unavailable once existing stock is depleted."

This part of the description has remained unchanged since 2012 or 2013.

A few of the second and in some cases third production run patches are still available in small numbers to buy from the AB Emblem website, (except Gemini 10 which sold out in October 2019), and Gemini 5 (just a hand full of the originals are left to be sold in the packaged set of now ten patches).

In July 2018 two more patches were added to the eight Gene Dorr carded set, Gemini 3 and Gemini 4. They are both 3.5" round. Only the first date code 07/1840 are found in the packets. All the others are sold as loose patches. The date codes are as follows;

  • Gemini 3 - 298029 A-B Emblem China 07/1840
  • Gemini 3 - 298029 A-B Emblem China 10/1840
  • Gemini 3 - 298029 A-B Emblem China 05/19 40
  • Gemini 3 - 298029. A-B Emblem 02/19 20 (USA) Year date code error, should read 02/20 20

  • Gemini 4 - 298024 A-B Emblem China 07/1840
  • Gemini 4 - 298024 A-B Emblem China 12/1840
  • Gemini 4 - 298024 A-B Emblem China 05/19 40
  • Gemini 4 - 298024 A-B Emblem China 01/20 40
  • Gemini 4 - 15966 A-B Emblem China 05/19 40 (SKU number error, discontinued 3" patch number used)

  • Gemini 10 - 142951 A-B Emblem China 11/19 40 (the old SKU number), this is the current patch date code for sale from the AB Emblem website)
As the original 4.2" Gemini 5 patch is almost sold out, another version has been manufactured. This revised version is smaller at 3.5" round, and has had the "8 Days or Bust" motif removed from under the wagon canopy.
  • Gemini 5 - 298902 A-B Emblem China 10/19 40 (this is the only date code found so far) Sold as loose patches.
Most of the other Gene Dorr Gemini patches in this set are also in the process of being revised. Some smaller but most larger. All these are sold as loose patches. The ones revised so far are the following;
  • Gemini Program 298439 A-B Emblem China 08/19 40 (larger at 3.5" round)
  • Gemini 6 - 298434 (Not found yet)
  • Gemini 7 - 298438 A-B Emblem China 05/19 40 (larger at 3.5" round)
  • Gemini 8 - 298442 A-B Emblem China 10/1840 (larger at 3.6" round)
  • Gemini 8 - 298442 A-B Emblem China 04/19 40 (larger at 3.6" round)
  • Gemini 9 - 142070 A-B Emblem China 10/19 40 (same size as original. Probably an error as it has the old SKU number too)
  • Gemini 9 - 298435 A-B Emblem China 10/19 40 (smaller at 3.8" wide x 2.5" high, has same date code as the Gemini 9 patch above)
  • Gemini 10 - 298437 (Not found yet)
  • Gemini 11 - 298440 (Not found yet)
  • Gemini 11 - 144744 A-B Emblem China 03/20 40 (probably an Error as it has the old SKU number instead of the new one)
  • Gemini 12 - 144745 A-B Emblem China 11/19 40 (original SKU number and 3" round size)
  • Gemini 12 - 298436 A-B Emblem China 10/1840 (larger at 3.5" round)
I can confirm that all the sizes and date codes listed above are correct. I will update these lists when other patch sizes, SKU numbers and date codes are found and reported.

Note; Only the 3.5" revised Gemini Program patch is available to buy from the AB Emblem website at this time. The other revised Gemini patches are only available from a very few AB Emblem agents and retailers.

AB Emblem have produced a photo poster of the 11 Gene Dorr Gemini patches. This poster can be seen on the Skyforce Space Patches and The Space Store websites. The 11 patches all have their original old SKU patch design numbers beneath them. (None of the new revised SKU numbers unfortunately).
