Welcome to collectSPACE, mooncollector (I'm a newbie too)! Gene Dorr briefly mentions the LM-1 patch you refer to on the unflown patches page of his website. Apparently, the ascent engine of the LM was fired while the ascent and descent stages were still attached, which is why the LM appears to be exploding! |

Funny this should come up - I had just been thinking about this (LM-1 patch) and was going to suggest/request that Chris (a.k.a. spaced-out) consider doing that one - or indeed why not the Grumman Lunar Module patch? Ok, while I'm on a roll, was there ever any consensus on the authenticity or lack thereof of the LM-13 logo (someone produced a nice looking patch, but there was some doubt apparently if that was based on a real Grumman logo. If it was, then Chris you might have some interested buyers of that patch as well. Finally, the link provided earlier in this thread seems to be broken. I recently bought at auction a sample of LM-11 mylar discarded during its fit check, and so I want to get a high-res scan to print to use in a small display. I'd much appreciate it if anyone who has one that can send me a copy. Finally, newbies Skeptic1 and mooncollector, welcome, and definitely check out Chris' CrewPatches.com website - his current LM patch series is really well-done. |

Since many of you are likely to have a few extras lying around I thought it might make things easier for collectors if I offer trades for those looking to buy my replica patches.I would be looking for certain Lion Brothers patches (7-11, 13, Skylab project, ASTP, and some of their STS patches), and most vintage bare back AB Emblem patches. I can only take patches that are really in very fine to near mint condition - no stained, scruffy, warped or floppy patches. Trade value depends on the patch but as an example I could probably trade a typical LB Apollo patch from the list above in v. fine condition for two examples of one of my replicas. A good LB Apollo 11 I could maybe trade for two different replicas. Please email me directly if you're interested. |

I apologize for the delay in the release of the LM-7 patch. Unfortunately the final delivery is currently tied up in customs. With luck I should have them in my hands sometime next week. The LM-5, 9 and 11 may be ready sometime in April to early May. LM-4 will be the last in the series, and likely ready in May. |

I am sorry to see you are not going to do a LM project patch or LM-13 like we see at the start of this post, but all the same it has some fantastic looking patches in the set.Thank you for doing them. |

I quite like that LM-13 patch but I've never seen decal artwork for that spacecraft. I suspect that this is a fantasy patch design created in the last few years. As such it doesn't form part of the current LM insignia set which is based on period Grumman artwork. In any case when the LM patch set (as currently defined) is finished I'll see what other projects I can tackle. |

The LM-13 patch from earlier in this thread is mine, and I cannot disagree with spaced out's assessment. As I said then; I had not seen this design before or since. In addition, nobody in this thread has said that they recognize the design or know anything about it. (Also, I notice that the Lunar Module artwork in the LM-13 patch is practically a copy of that in the LM-10 emblem.)That being said, the LM-13 patch is 5” square and has a bare thread back. I bought it in an eBay auction in March 2003. I paid $16.10 plus shipping and handling. I don't know anything else about it. |

I would say that if the LM-13 patch has no base decal or sticker, then it shouldn't be under consideration. The LM-1/Apollo 5 patch is a different case, and I would love to have a good replica of it.My $.02 worth... |

Was a drawing/decal ever made for LM-3, spider? I saw a patch a while back and it was crude compared to the other drawings. I'm just surprised they didn't have one. |

Just wondering if some one/Chris has asked Grumman public relations if they would have the info we're looking for as they made the lunar modules (LMs) and as Chris has put down, the decals were used on the paperwork for each of the LMs.If that is so, the decals for: LM-1, LM-3, LM-13 and the LM project decal will be on the paperwork that goes with the LMs would it not? It may be just a case of asking Grumman or the new friends that have added to this post. I do hope so. |

My impression is that in patch/decal terms there was a divide between the Grumman staff working at Bethpage and those working at the KSC.Someone at Bethpage decided it would be good to have an insignia for the spacecraft they were working on and the LM-4 decal was created. This started a 'tradition' of sorts so designs were created for each subsequent spacecraft. Over at the KSC, the Grumman staff worked with the spacecraft when they were delivered as part of an Apollo mission, thus LM-1 was a key part of Apollo 5 and it was likely someone at the KSC who decided to create the LM-1 / APOLLO-5 patch, and the Grumman KSC patches. This may have created something of a parallel tradition for the Grumman staff at KSC (which peaked at around 1,400 for Apollo 11), whereby Apollo patches were produced by/for the Grumman staff there for each mission. These limited run patches may include one of the rare varieties of Apollo 9 patch, and of course the 'Grumman' Apollo 10 crew patch, the 'Grumman' Apollo 11 patch etc... It would only have taken one guy who was keen on producing patches, or maybe someone with a family connection at a patch company, to get the tradition started and to keep producing patches for each mission. This is all speculation but I think this explains why we see decals or patches for some missions and not others. |

Just a quick update to say that unfortunately the LM-7 patches are still blocked somewhere in customs.Hopefully things will get sorted out soon (in the next week or two) but in the worst case the package may end up going back to AB for re-delivery (which would probably take several weeks in all). |

Ahh, French Customs... I saw an American school teacher attempt to "smuggle" a salami into a French Protectorate. You would have thought it was some kind of shoulder launched missile. The embassy worked for a week to secure its rescue. |

I received my LM-7s today (Thurs 7/4)...The photo doesn't do this one justice, folks. The detail and shading are simply gorgeous "in the flesh." This might be my favorite of the series so far. |

I would have to agree. The detailing in the mountains give the scene an almost 3D effect when the patch is tilted slightly from side to side. Great job Chris. |

I echo all the praise for the project and the actual patches. However, one point I haven't heard mentioned yet are the beautiful envelopes that the patches are shipped in. Totally unexpected and something just as beautiful as the patches they contain!I eagerly await each new installment. Keep up the excellent work! |

I received my LM-5s today; I now have the complete set. They'll look gorgeous framed together, and make a terrific visual tribute to the people who designed, built, and flew that utterly unique machine. Thanks again to Chris Spain for going to the effort and expense of producing these, and to AB Emblem for doing an outstanding job converting some very difficult artwork into embroidery. Now, Chris...what's next? No pressure |

My collection of LM patches is "complete", too. A great set of patches. Many thanks to Chris for going through all these challenges to get this on it's way. AB Emblem did a great job and Chris much more of that to discuss this with AB and to organize all the needed things. Again, thanks a lot for a wonderful LM patch set. |

Just to echo the sentiments expressed here, this has proven to be a superlative piece of work of which Chris can feel justifiably proud. The research and attention to detail as well as the accomplishment in guaranteeing the patches reflect the artists original intent has been outstanding. A first class job all round. |
