Honoring Apollo artist Allen E. Stevens and in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo Program Many people admired the beautiful artwork of the mission emblems during the Apollo Program. Until recently the general public was unaware of the identity of the artist who designed four of the early mission emblems. The crews of Apollo 1, Apollo 7, Apollo 9 and Apollo 10 wore the work of artist Allen S. Stevens. But before the final designs were arrived at, Mr. Stevens painted many draft designs. Working with each crew Stevens evolved the draft designs into the final patch that the astronauts wore during their missions. While not selected as the official mission emblem Stevens also created designs for Apollo 8, Apollo 11, Apollo 12 and Apollo 17. Tim Gagnon, portrait and graphic artist of Titusville, FL who has worked with two flight crews to design their patches, has organized this commemorative set of Apollo Mission Emblem drafts in tribute to the man whose work inspired many. This will be a set of seven 4" fully embroidered patches. Now accepting pre-orders (PDF order form) for the limited edition seven patches at $125 per set United States orders $150.00 per set outside the US (Priority Mail Flat Rate envelope). Each patch will ship near the 40th anniversary date of the mission (the first patch in the series, Apollo 7, will ship with Apollo 8 in December). All proceeds from the sale of the patches will benefit the U.S. Space Walk of Fame Foundation, in part to include Allen Stevens' name on their Project Apollo Monument. For more information about Stevens' designs, see: The Apollo emblems of Al Stevens Note* We will need to pre-sell at least 50 sets. No checks will be deposited until the order is placed. |

Which begs the question: Did he also design emblems for Apollos 13 through 16? |

If he did, I think we would have found some clues among his possessions. |

Thank you to all of you who have emailed me with requests for a set and some great questions. The goal is to release each patch on the 40th anniversary of it's mission. Due to the later than planned "kick-off" the patch for Apollo 7 and Apollo 8 will be released in December, 2008. The others are as follows: - Apollo 9 - March, 2009
- Apollo 10 - May, 2009
- Apollo 11 - July, 2009
- Apollo 12 - Novemeber, 2009
- Apollo 17 - December, 2009*
*You won't have to wait until 2012 for Apollo 17.The company which embroiders my commemorative set is making these patches. I considered other companies but this one provided the quickest lead time and least expensive price per patch - which in turn will allow us to donate more to the SWOF. We still need to pre-sell 50 sets as this is the minimum order for patches. I don't accept PayPal sorry. Either send in your personal check if you've done business with me in the past, a bank check or money order or for our friends in Europe another option (which has been done in the past) is to send cash in a registered letter that I have to sign for. The patches will be mailed in the (Domestic or International) Flat Rate Priority Envelope along with a Delivery Confirmation tracking number. I hope this information helps and that you will support this project to honor Mr. Stevens who quietly provided all of us with some outstanding and inspirational artwork. |

I have received enthusiastic but small amount of responses about ordering this set from six people and one actual order. The reason I'm telling you this is because the original plan was to mail out each patch on or near their 40th anniversary (with Apollo 17 in Dec, 2009.) To do this for Apollo 7/8 (Dec, 2008) I need to place the embroidery order by mid-October at the latest. If by then I do not have 50 pre-sold sets, then all monies will be returned and the project canceled. I don't want you to think that these sets will be held in inventory for future orders. This is a one-shot deal in an effort to raise funds for the SWOF. I sure would like to be successful but I won't if there isn't enough interest. If you want this set of patches and help the SWOF please send in your completed order form with payment now. |

While I don't have 50 sets sold, I'm within breaking even if we get four more orders. Once I fill the orders as planned, I will have patches left which will be sold and all proceeds going to honoring Mr. Stevens on the Apollo Monument. Once that is accomplished any other funds raised will be donated to the SWOF. I realize this is not going as I hoped but I hope those of you who were "on the fence" will submit your paid order. |

Thanks to the cS community, we are "Go!" We can now afford to have the patches made and info sheets printed. There will only be 50 patches made of each design. So if you want to get in on this project, now is the time. Once the goal of honoring Mr. Stevens on the Apollo Monument is met, then the remaining proceeds will be donated to the SWOF. |

The order for 50 patches each has been placed with the embroidery company. For those of you who have supported this project, you will receive all of the patches and info sheets in one mailing. I expect to be able to make this happen before Thanksgiving. Not all 50 are sold so now's the time to get in on this very limited set and honor the man who made the beautiful designs possible, Al Stevens. |

Just a notice to let everyone know that the sets of Stevens patches have been sent to the people who ordered them. There are plenty still available so if anyone is interested send in your completed order form and payment. In a slight change to the original plan, when you order a set, you will receive the entire set straight away instead of on the anniversary of the mission celebrated. |

Just wanted to let you know that I received the patches today and they are AWESOME! Haven't decided which is my favorite one, but I'm leaning towards the Apollo 11 patch. Thanks so much! |

I received my set in the mail yesterday and it is totally awesome. I highly recommend this set to those patch collectors considering it. It is first rate quality as all of Tim's products are. My favorites are Apollo 11 and Apollo 17. I think I like them better than the originals! |

Received your Al Stevens patches today and they look really excellent. Great detail and colors. This is a very nice final result of the article which made Stevens famous among us space buffs. And the 'extras' were also very much appreciated. The X-15 patch is especially great. Thanks, buddy! Here's to our joint artwork in the new year... |

After being on the fence for a while, I ordered a set of Tim's Al Stevens patches, and I'm very glad I did. I got them today and they are GORGEOUS...the pictures here and in the "Spaceflight" article don't do them justice at all.I don't know how many sets Tim has left, but if you're a patch enthusiast, I highly recommend getting these pieces of a little-known chapter in Apollo history while you can...you won't be disappointed. |

I missed the patches as they were released, but I bought a complete set (the were sold as single patches) a few weeks ago on ebay. I did not pay too much for them, because no one exept me was bidding on the patches. All seven Apollo patches were offered and the Al Stevens Skylab II patch. Now I want to know, was the Skylab II patch part of this original set, or could it be that I did buy fakes? |

Interesting... Who knows, where the Skylab II patch comes from?I gave about 160 USD for the 8 patch set, I bought and the patches look real great! - Not like cheap knock-offs or done in Asia. |

They're gorgeous... I wish I'd bought two sets now. As to the Skylab II patch, I looked at the artwork online, and it's terrific, but I have no idea where your patch might have come from. I bought my Apollo set directly from Tim Gagnon, c. the origin of this thread. |
