I'm looking for a clear image of the "crew patches" worn by the "Daedalus" crew from the movie "Space Cowboys." Can anyone help?

I was fortunate that I got a "Daedalus" when I worked for an effects house, that made the suits.

If I can work out any and all copyright issues I would love to come out with a set of patches from Countdown, Marooned, Capricorn One, Space Cowboys... all the movies I've enjoyed since I was much younger.

I have the artwork for most of those already but I need a good closeup of the "Daedalus" patch. Can you help?

Could I put in a request for the James Bond space shuttle Moonraker patch, if you are making a list?

I actually own an original Capricorn One mission patch used in the film, so I'd be happy to supply a scan. Copyright will be the sticky issue. I also own patches from Armageddon and Deep Impact.

Here are some more movies for you to consider: "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun," "Mission to Mars" (not only the two Mars crews but also the WSS patch [World? Space Station]), "Deep Impact" and a couple more: "The Right Stuff" and "Apollo 13" (LOL).

A good version of the Apollo 18 patch from Space or any other flight patches from that show.

What about "Silent Running"? I'll e-mail you a picture from the movie of Bruce Dern wearing patches. Not really very detailed, but he's wearing quite a lot in the photo. More searching will be needed.

Are you only including Hollywood/US productions? I saw that Space:1999 and that BBC production I earlier mentioned were not on the list. Meanwhile, patches from some of the movies you've listed (i.e., 2001, 2010, Alien, Armadeddon, Star Trek) are already available from other sources.

In your listing of Star Trek, are you including all the spinoff/sequel movies/TV shows?

If you are successful with this you will be providing quite a fantastic collection for us all.

I can't find an image right now, but I seem to recall that the crew on the space station at the very beginning of the movie "Meteor" had an interesting patch... if anyone has an image of it, I'd like to see if my childhood memory is reconfirmed... thanks.

Here is a scan of my Apollo XVIII patch from James A. Michener's "Space." I can provide a TIFF file, if desired. The patch was obtained from Space Coast International in 1992.

Good one Francis - yes, I'd like to see that again as well. Is that the movie with Brian Keith and Natalie Wood as the Soviets who work with Sean Connery to use the nuclear missiles to blow up a comet?

I'm open to any production that cSer's enjoyed. I've just mentioned some off the top of my head. I'm sure there are plenty others.

Unfortunately, my goal is to recreate the patches as accurately as possible. In the case of Apollo 18 from "Space" the Eagle looks more like a turkey buzzard and the Sun - Moon shadow is off.

Keep 'em coming folks.

That's the one... if I recall right (going on fuzzy childhood memory here), the space station was in the Mars / asteroid belt region, and yet was an exact copy of Skylab...!

Have you lot had a look at the film patches that are on eBay now? You can get most of the patches you are looking for on there:
  • 2001
  • 2010
  • all the Alien/s
  • Stargate
  • Space Above and Beyond
  • Space 1999
Or go to the eBay shops that do patches to get them. You may not have to make up so many.

Of course, for the Charybdis mission from Star Trek, all you need is the Apollo 17 emblem and just remove the word "Apollo" from it...

Bill C. and I were discussing the difficulty of obtaining clear images from some of our favorite movies and we both reached the conclusion that we might have to watch the movie and keep pausing it whenever there is a decent view of the patch so we can sketch in the details.

Question for all you more knowledgeable techs out there. If you watch a DVD on the computer can you pause it and do a "print screen" command to try and capture the image?

To protect copyrights, the default screen capture features of most major operating systems are disabled when a commercial DVD is being played. That said, there are software packages that allow you to bypass those protections.

When you first posted your request for the Daedalus patch, I did try to get a clear frame or two from the Space Cowboys DVD. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a scene where the patch was both large and clear.

But that shouldn't be necessary. Before you can produce any of these patches, you are going to need to obtain licenses from the individual studios and in doing so, you can request the art.

Thanks Robert. I probably should have done that to start with. But long ago when I started thinking it would be great to have those crew patches from my favorite movies, I wasn't thinking about having them embroidered myself.

For those of you who wish to help. Email me with the appropriate address to contact at the studio(s) which made the movie. I'll work up draft letter to send to each of them.

An alternative to screen grabs may be trying to get press kits for the various productions, and looking at the stills or the slides included.

For the record, there are several pieces of DVD playback software that allow for screen grabs. A quick Google search should uncover them fairly easily. I would recommend Cyberlink PowerDVD for starters, which has a screen grab feature and is an excellent all around player.

It's also worth nothing that there are SEVERAL companies making such patches now (and selling them on eBay and elsewhere) without getting the license to do so. I'm not recommending that's what you should do, just that it happens a lot.

Sorry I came to this thread fairly late... I was just looking for some Capricorn One artwork - always liked that patch! I have a scan and a b/w photo, so I was going to go ahead and get one made for personal use!

I also have one of those Apollo 18 patches (Space), they were made by Stewarts, I happened to send them some artwork and they said "oh yes we recognise that and have one left" That would have been in the 1990s. They also made me a one-off Pilgrim patch from Marooned. I have an original props 2010 Leonov patch also. I have seen an Ironman One patch on Spacesoup Patches.

So what has happened on this, any progress or ideas? Anyone want to go for the Capricorn One patch?

On edit: Some others to add to the list, the three space missions that went to Mars in the TV version of The Martian Chronicles. There's footage of the second mission crew with patches, and Rock Hudson (as Col. Wilder, commander of the third mission) has another patch. I have a photo somewhere...

Remembering way too much of this show that is good for anyone...

Intergalactictrading.com has a very good selection of SF patches from TV and film.

By the way, props to Butch Wilks for remembering Space: Above and Beyond. Good but short-lived military-themed SF show with a number of handsome insignia.

Not that I know of Al but "Rocky Jones - Space Ranger" did.

Does anyone remember the 1972 TV ABC Movie of the Week: "The Astronaut"? It starred Monte Markham as a look alike for "Col. Brice Randolph" who dies on Mars. The plot line is a like a combination of "Capricorn One" meets "Dave" as NASA officials try to save the space program by having Markham's character replace the astronaut.

I rememeber it was well done and cannot find it anywhere. Maybe someone here on cS knows a way to contact Monte Markham???

I just remembered another movie from 1966. "Way, Way Out" starring: Jerry Lewis, Connie Stevens, Dick Shawn, Anita Ekberg, Dennis Weaver, Howard Morris, Brian Keith and Robert Morley.

Lewis and Stevens are sent to the Moonbase to replace Weaver and Morris (who has been there way too long). But before they can launch, they need to get married (can't have single men and women working together...) Dick Shawn and Anita Ekberg are Soviet Cosmonauts "manning" the Russian base.

They have a simple red, white and blue patch in the movie for the "National Aeronautics and Weather Administration" NAWA and try as I might I can't figure out the white symbol in the center of the patch. Can anyone else?

I thought 'Pilgrim' was a film about the US attempt to beat the Russians to the first Moon landing. It used a hybrid rocket that included a Polaris third stage and a Mercury capsule adapted for the landing. The astronaut was to survive in a lunar shelter launched by another rocket until they figured a way of getting him back. As I recall, in the last scene in the film, he found this shelter by using a toy mouse given him by his son as a talisman to point the way.

As far as I can see, no-one has yet mentioned Buck Rogers in the 21st Century. Did he have a mission patch?

You're absolutely right, I just read back my own post - sorry, Pilgrim was the mission from the movie Countdown, 1969, with James Caan and Bob Duvall. Marooned is a different movie, with the "Ironman One" patch.

In the 25th Century? Intergalactic Trading or any science-fiction dealer would have the TV series' United Earth patch. But so far, haven't seen a patch for Buck's shuttle flight.

Hearing of that "Way, Way Out" movie makes me feel old. I recall having seen that movie as a kid. It was pretty corny.

What about "The Reluctant Astronaut" with Don Knotts? Did he have a mission patch?

An episode of the 1980s vintage "Twilight Zone" featured astronauts on a mission, but to where I don't recall. I do remember that they wore a mission emblem with a design and the name "Columbus" on it. I liked the design when I saw it, but that's all I recall.
