For a while now I've had various bits of Lion Brothers space patch information scattered across my various sites, including the mini-site for the LB Shuttle patch discussion thread and a page on my extras site dedicated to the plastic-backed Apollo LB patch prototypes.I've now decided to pull this all together into one site which you'll find here: http://www.edgeofdarkness.com/lbspacepatches/ It's based around the full list of all their Apollo and Shuttle era patches, but also includes a few bits and pieces of background information such as a brief discussion on the backing types used, the issue of 'tails', a mention of some of the places their patches were sold, and a speculative timeline for the history of their space patch production. It's still something of a work in progress but hopefully this site will be useful as a reference for those looking to collect Lion Brothers space patches. Of course any suggestions or any additional background info would be welcome. IP: Logged |

Very nice Chris! Your website is a welcome addition to Gene's and Jacques', as well as books like Relics of the Space Race. You've expanded on previous efforts, added new information and the layout makes it easy to locate and compare different missions, styles and manufacturers. I'm particularly impressed by your attention to the pattern in plastic backings and through what venues Lions' patches were originally offered.IP: Logged |

Awesome. Thank you. I really appreciate the Tang reference. My uncle worked for General Foods who made among other things Tang. Drank lots growing up just because he'd always keep us stocked with Tang and Gaines Burgers for the dogs. I did get the Lion Brothers patch set described on the site and still have them today. I even kept them in the brown padded envelope they arrived in for many years. They were very nicely done patches and what I came to expect as far as quality was concerned with space patches. Some of the newly made Apollo patches are of extremely poor quality compared to these. A side-by-side comparison would really embarrass the folks making the new ones. Speaking of Tang... If you are ever in a Mexican grocery store look for some Mango Tang (dry powder mix). My uncle received a case from a store that had received it by accident and it is really good. Easily found in Texas and probably the other border states. Ben IP: Logged |

Can I ask why the Skylab 2 Wives patch is missing from your new web page as it was made by Lion Brothers and has a hallmark on it and is part of the hallmark set. Also, has the Apollo 15 patch two hallmarks as you can see the number 15 in the bottom of the patch too? Your new web page is awesome. It helps no end in looking for Lion Bros patches on the web. Keep it up. Thanks, butch IP: Logged |

Thanks for the feedback. Really most of what makes up the site is just combining lists that were split across different pages of my existing sites but hopefully it should be more useful in this form.Butch - your point about the Apollo 15 hallmark is correct. It's really the small "15" that is the Lion Brothers hallmark. The "XV" is a feature of all the Apollo 15 patches. I'll correct the notes tonight. I do also intend to closeups of the hallmarks to the zoomed images when I get the time. Regarding the Skylab II Wives patch, I actually thought this was made by some other company, not Lion Brothers. Maybe someone can clarify this? IP: Logged |

In reference to the Wives patch: i have had three of them and all are so close to the Lion Bros Skylab 2 crew patch that i think that they had to be made by LB. e.g. the colors on the patch are the same as on the crew patch made by LB; the backing on the patch is the same as on LB patches; the workmanship on them for that time it can only be the Lion Brothers who made them, and last of all why put a hallmark on it if its not made by LB.? The ones I have are from the time of the mission so they cannot be fake ones but you can check with Eli Iskow to see if he can help as he has sold a number off them on eBay.IP: Logged |

Very, very nice site !About 4 years ago Donnis Willis sold me a really nice STS-34 patch that was different than the AB version. He thought at the time it was a Lions version, but from what I've seen on your site, that is ruled out - so likely it is an Eagle Crest ? Another handy thing for the STS portion would be a "Crew Worn" notation. I'm fairly certain the STS-1 crew wore the Lions version on their inflight clothing. Am I ignorant here given AB was "official" ? (Can of worms I bet....) IP: Logged |

STS-1 worn version is not the LB-patch. Flag and lettering "USA" are visible in wing on flown one, it is thinner and orange is brighter.IP: Logged |

Good work on your site Chris, I think most of the mystery of the LBShuttle mission patches was finally cleared up by all of the comparisons and collaberation of us patch collectors. it will be a great reference for other collectors. Dan M IP: Logged |

Indeed the shuttle list is entirely the result of discussion on the CollectSpace board and input from everyone here. I still see it as a work in progress so if anyone ever has any more patches to add or other ideas on the whole story they should email me, or post in this thread or the old LB Shuttle Patch thread.
