What's the significance of the black 'hill' which features on the crew name tags? |

As I understand it, the astronauts often refer to the ascent phase as going "up the hill," and I believe that's why they put that in there. Being on orbit is like being on the summit of a mountain-- it took lots of kinetic energy to get up there, and once there you've got a similar amount of potential energy to eventually deal with. But first, you have to get up the hill. The commander of the RTF mission, Eileen Collins, has some experience in that regard. (See also: Stuck in the Bucket) | |
