After years of searching, I finally acquired an NSS logo patch. I think it's a shame that the NSS doesn't offer them to members anymore. The logo pin is nice, but they need to bring back the patch! Do we know anyone on the NSS Board of Directors? --John |

John, Would you like a free IASP logo patch to go with the NSS patch? Bill [This message has been edited by collectSPACE Admin (edited February 05, 2005).] |

NSS doesn't offer anything in my opinion. I spent the money for a membership a year or so ago. I saw two magazines and that was it. I called them on several occasions because I was initially told there would be a membership packet of some kind. The only thing I got from them was excuses. NSS is a joke!! |

I'm sorry you feel this way, but I beg to differ. Besides having served on their Board of Directors for four years and before that, as a member of their headquarters' staff, I have been a paying member since 1987. Joining NSS is not about "getting stuff" - its about lending your voice and support to political action committees and projects that make a real difference in Washington. If you were to give money to the Red Cross for their tsunami relief fund, would you rather your money go toward sending you nice patches and pins or to the cause which inspired you to give? Many people confuse the NSS with a NASA fan club, which it is not. Its a pro-space grassroots organization, which means that you derive from it what you put in. Did you seek out a local chapter? If there wasn't a local chapter, did you try to start your own? I'm not saying that NSS is not without its current share of problems (as are all non-profit space organizations) but to call the society founded by O'Neill and von Braun a joke is to disregard over 30 years of hard work on the behalf of the thousands involved.

I knew I'd catch criticism for this one but that's ok. Sorry, just my opinion. I guess I am being harsh by calling NSS a joke. That was wrong. I understand what they stand for and what they do. It just seemed as though once I sent in my membership, I was forgotten. There was barely, if it all, any communication even through the mail. That's why I chose not to renew. We do have a chapter here. I've been to a couple of their meetings. The people who run it are what I would call "a little out there", but they do mean well.. They did do a good job with the ISDC conference last year. I do apologize to anyone that may find my opinion offensive. As I stated above, just my opinion. Thanks for reminding me, Robert. I just wrote out my annual renewal check. When I get the SpaceShipOne gift patch, I'll send that out to Bill as thanks for the cool IASP patch.I have one of those royal blue astronaut flight jackets they sell at all the gift shops. On it are my three favorite patches: The Astronaut Memorial Foundation patch, a vintage "Space and Rocket Center-Honorary Astronaut-Huntsville, Alabama" patch (made when Space Camp was still just a dream in Von Braun's mind), and now the National Space Society patch. All it lacks is a collectSPACE patch. I wear the jacket with pride and respect. That's no joke. --John

John - Do you think that other space collectors would be interested in a free IASP logo patch for their collection? Bill quote: Originally posted by sts205cdr: Bill,I'd love one, thank you! I'll e-mail you right away. --John

I'm sure some might, especially if they're like me and are interested in patches from space museums, organizations, clubs, etc. I also think the space philatists might be interested in having one. --John |

Hi John, Write when you receive the IASP patch (see photo above) and pin this week. I even included an IASP balloon. We gave the balloons out at shows until parents complained that balloons are dangerous for children. We eliminated them at shows when collectors blew them up and then (you guessed it) made them explode. Show officials told us to stop giving them out. I will send the patch free to anyone who asks for one here and they must send an SASE to me. I only have about 200 of the patches, pins and balloons. If a lapel pin is requested, the SASE must be prepaid for 60 cents. I will send my address to anyone who requests it. In exchange for this free service I would appreciate it if collectors would donate a space cover to the Space Unit with the SASE - but this is not necessary if you have no duplicates to spare. You can also submit a short article on a meeting with an astronaut or viewing a launch for the Astrophile. I will create a special column for these brief articles. Long articles are also appreciated. But these items are FREE to the first 200 collectors who send a SASE. Good collecting!
