With the acquisition of the new Dragon 1/72 Saturn V, I'm beginning a new project!

It is my long-term (maybe very long-term!) goal to recreate the rollout of the Saturn V from the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) onboard the crawler and tower.

This is going to be a BIG display. Right now the plan is to only do the a partial depth of the VAB as a "backdrop." I would like to do the Launch Control Complex (LCC) fully, and the Saturn V will sit in the center. The final display on base will be about 8' wide by 3' deep and 7'6 high. The intended home is in our SpaceEx classroom.

I've got a good start collecting data and sizes. I really could use a floor plan or site plan!

I know that members here can tell each other how many threads per inch are on the rotating cuff of the Canadarm, surely someone has access to some drawings of the VAB!

Let the adventure begin!

I would really recommend joining the Yahoo LUT group, a great source of information.

Also The Apollo Saturn Reference page is another very good Saturn modeller related site.

Bob Andrepont's Scribd archive has some general information and dimensions.

Ninfinger Productions: Scale Models
Another great site linked with the Yahoo space modellers site packed with information Capcom Espace has some good VAB information.

Thanks for the links!

The scribed one has some good overall dimensions.

Progress so far:

Phase 1: Planning - After taking a further look at the building layout, It is looking unlikely that I'll be able to incorporate the LCC in the display. This makes me really upset! The cool retro architecture of this signature structure would really set off the exhibit. What I did not realize is that although much shorter, the building is just as long as the VAB.

Adding the structure would push the display out to over ten feet long and 5 feet wide.

I might go ahead and build the model anyhow including a cutaway into the firing rooms. It would be kind of cool to do one in Apollo configuration and one in STS.

Made some progress on the planning stage today.

The display will be 6'6 long by 3'10 wide and 9'0 tall (gulp). The base is 16" tall.

The front of the display will have three light boxes or monitors containing information about the VAB, crawler, LUT, and Saturn V.

All times are CT (US)
