Here are some teaser shots of a new diorama in the works. This is an order from a client who requested an Apollo 11 diorama for educational use. PHOTO #1. http://gerathsdesign.com/TempNet/Lemdio1.jpg The white cardstock represents the main base. This will be made of wood, probably Mahogany or Red Oak. This will be stained and lacquered. It will be stained with a slight reddish tone, this will bring out the gray/light gray tones in the lunar surface. The four sections of lunar surface are represented with particle board. This board is 1/4 inch think and will be fastened to the main base when completed, in the same configuration as shown. The placement of items is explained in the image. The term "scrap" is a common museum term that is referring to an information plaque. Below is a link to some shots of the environment before painting, note the footprints. This took forever I must say... :^) IMAGE #2. http://gerathsdesign.com/TempNet/lemdio2.jpg http://gerathsdesign.com/TempNet/lemdio3.jpg http://gerathsdesign.com/TempNet/lemdio4.jpg Once the environment is dry it will be painted and detailed. I will post more shots as the project progresses. Thanks for taking a peek. Noticed that the MESA is not deployed. Since it was in shadow most images of it are underexposed: http://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/a11/as11-40-5886.jpg Here's a well lit one: http://www.myspacemuseum.com/c321b.jpg From your image it looks like you're including the bent probes as well. That's a nice touch. For additional realism, how about placing the jettison bag under the descent stage too? http://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/a11/as11-40-5850HR.jpg http://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/a11/as11-40-5917.jpg The SEQ bay goes around back: http://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/a11/as11-40-5927.jpg I know I know. You'll add all of these details to the diorama when I order one, right? ;-) |

You took the words right out of my mouth... ;^) I am not building the display with the MESA deployed simply because the goals of this display doesn't really require it. It is designed to be a demonstration display, to give a basic understanding of the lander and the experiments that were placed near it. Although it would be more accurate with the MESA deployed, I don't think it is really required for a display like this. But by all means... if you want something like this built with the MESA deployed... by all mean... contact me. :^) Dana ------------------ Visit my Studios Website at http://www.GerathsDesign.com |

Yes. It is a great little kit and not bad on the accuracy. I have built probably close to a dozen of these and love it every time. This one I have been taken special care in the details and so far I am really happy with it. Dana ------------------ Visit my Studios Website at http://www.GerathsDesign.com |

Dana,Looks like a great project, with some nice pictures to illustrate your progress. There is a web site: www.tranquillity-base.com that has a lot of information that might be useful to you. This site also includes a FineScale Modeler article from September 1989, that shows a number of ways to make your Monogram LM more accurate. The information is possibly a little outdated, but still might be of some use to you. Look forward to seeing more photos as your project progresses. Dave, Thanks for the link. I found that site a couple of days ago and added it to my growing list of space related bookmarks. There are more shots of the dios progress in a new thread I added today. Thanks again Dave! Dana ------------------ Visit my Studios Website at http://www.GerathsDesign.com |
