I acquired a collection of space memorabilia from the late Juanita J. Adkins, who worked at NASA during the Apollo era as a flight crew support member. Within the collection in particular is a flag with description it was aboard the SC-107 and LM-5, mounted on cardboard. The mounted flag was wrapped in tissue paper with a note handwritten by Mrs. Adkins that also stated it was Apollo 11 space flown and lunar landed.

I'm writing to see if anyone is familiar with flight crew support member Juanita J. Adkins, or Richard (Rick) W. Nygren, who I was able to find some information on, and appears to have worked closely with her at times. I would like to reach out to him if possible and learn more about Juanita and whether the flag was given to her by a specific astronaut from Apollo 11, or gifted by NASA for her work. I have personalized and signed messages to her from 10 different Apollo astronauts, and it appears she had a good working relationship with many of the astronauts. Any information would be helpful.

I've since framed the flag with other items in her collection...

I believe she may be in this picture?

Most likely lunar orbited (vice landed); still extremely valuable at auction. This would be the less common variant (believe there were two different manufacturers of the PPK carried flags on that mission).

Flight Crew Support member Juanita Adkins did go out of her way to describe it as space flown and lunar landed on the tissue she wrapped it in. Is there something that leads you to believe otherwise?

Below is a piece of fabric presented to her from Apollo 13's Lunar Module, and another envelope reflecting her title...

Interesting collection! The majority of Apollo flown flags was stowed away in a Command Module, only minority was lunar module flown. That's why the flag most likely orbited the Moon. The note may be true or a mistake, it is inconclusive, in my opinion.

All times are CT (US)
