Photos like 68-HC-70 (Apollo 8) seem to show that S-IC stages of the Saturn V arrived at Kennedy Space Center and were stacked in the Vehicle Assembly Building without the F-1 engine nozzle extensions attached. Were those nozzle extensions installed in the VAB or at Pad 39?

Wasn't there a removable work platform under the engines at the pad, or was that just in the VAB?

It looks like some type of engine service platform (the yellow object) can be seen at ground level in front of the Mobile Launcher in Apollo 8 photo S68-55416.
