Back in 2009, I purchased two pieces from the Mercury Redstone-1 rocket from its failed launch. I have been researching for a long time and cannot find any idea what these pieces are. I was told they were used to connect the spacecraft to the launch vehicle.

If you have any idea of what they could be please let me know.

So these look to be rod or cable ends, that have been removed by either being cut or torn free.

The upper item in the photo still has part of the item it either controlled or was controlled by installed using a pin with split pins at either end and has a spring, used in aviation, to keep side tension on the fork end, to prevent the item from moving into the path of something else. They are not generally used structurally.

I have seen many of these items used in aviation in installations such as engine (throttle etc.) cables, push pull cables and rods and many other areas. To me the top item looks to have been cut at the right hand end by the way the metal is formed. This is similar to being cut with bolt cutters. The other ends look like they have been through a crash. These are normally connected to a lever, knob, actuator or quadrant, and are common to military, civilian, general aviation and also used in race cars and many other areas.

My gut feeling is that they come from a crash, due to the bending of the top item and broken fork end of the lower item or were removed hastily. cS'rs with better knowledge may be able to identify these items, or if the type of items were used in MR-1. I can't find details of the Redstone-Mercury booster adapter, someone may have these details available.

All times are CT (US)
