I want to know if there is a specific name or term for the block of block letters on the sides of Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and shuttle vehicles that spell out "United States"? Or that spell out "U.S Air Force" on the side of the Gemini 2 capsule.
The U.S. flag is called just that. And the white start in a blue circle with red, white and blue horizontal bars on U.S. military aircraft is called a "roundel."
But is there a generic name for those letters? Thanks for any help.

I have seen it referred to as a "typographical identifier," but I don't know if that is a widely used term.

Perhaps "insignia?" Drawings just call it out as markings.
