In recent weeks I've been systematically examining photographs of Orlan gloves with good provenance in an effort to catalog serial numbers, stylistic variations, and use dates across the entire sequence of glove models (7K, 8K, 10K, 10 KC, 10KM, etc).

As you can imagine, it's a bit of a challenge (especially when you mix in some of the questionable eBay gloves, and other oddballs that have found their way to auction). Currently, I have about 43 serial numbers and styles documented, but I'd like to add more.

If you have a glove, I'd love to add to the database. Here's what I need:

  1. The full serial number on the glove (for example: ГП-10К-2-0220081)
  2. Fingertip color
  3. Rubber "grip" color
  4. Number of grip pads on each finger
  5. Number of grip pads on each palm
  6. Color of metal wrist bearing (the metal ring on the inner assembly)
  7. Does it have a safety latch that folds over wrist release mechanism?
  8. Color of fabric on inner assembly
  9. Flown? Provenance (if willing)
  10. If you'd like to send a photo, showing the outer and/or inner glove assembly, that would be great!
It sounds like a lot, but these seem to be the critical variables. My goal in assembling this database is to assemble a definitive guide to the canonical characteristics of each glove model (and its variants).

This will help distinguish Zvezda frankenstein gloves and fakes from genuine examples. Plus, I'm hoping we can discern some pattern to the serial numbers, but I'm not sure that's possible). At the very least, we can begin to catalog glove serial numbers that were definitely flown (based on EVA photos and well-documented exemplars), as well as those used in training.

Someone attempted something like this a while back, but none of the people involved are still active on cS. If anyone has a copy of the document they produces, I'd love to see it.

Of course, I'll be making the results of the catalog available here on cS! Thanks!

Kevin, in my collection I have one Orlan glove Gennady Padalka used in space during an EVA. I also have pictures of a few more flown Orlan gloves. Please, be patient. I shall send you pictures.

Kevin, I noticed this is an old thread from 2013, but are you still active on the forum, and do you have the list of the cosmonaut gloves? I would love to submit mine and learn more about the gloves.

I have a similar database that was referenced on this forum a few years ago. I will see if i can find it.

The latest very high resolution photos of the EVAs will certainly help. In addition to onboard ISS photos showing the actual glove serial numbers, photos taken by those cosmonauts who planned to sell one of their spacewalk Orlan gloves as these gloves have a limited lifespan.
