I recently came across this item and its associated drawing. The drawing makes it look like this may be something associated with the Apollo lunar module, given the Grumman connection and the "LUNAR M." notation. The piece looks to be made from one solid piece and it's just a hair over 13 inches long. I cannot find any markings or numbers on the part. There are threads inside both ends, and a set of three holes on each side. The drawing I have appears to be an old photocopy and is titled "Piston - Launch Bar Control Bungee, N.L.G. (Lunar M)" with various numbers associated with it. Unfortunately the area to the left where the contract no. looks to have been handwritten is too light to read. Here is a picture of the diagram that came with this piece. And the part itself: Apparently this was given to the owner by a friend who worked at Grumman and has since passed away, but the owner had no information beyond that. I'm not sure what this is, or where I might begin to research it, if it's of any significance. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this is? Or where I should start my research into it? Any and all help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance! |

NLG is Nose Landing Gear. It appear to be some sort of landing gear bungee. It would be used to meter fluid and act as part of a shock absorber within the nose gear. |

Zip code on dwg says the drawing is from the early 1960's or later. "(Lunar M)" seems to be by a different hand the the rest of the printing, it it just may be that I'm a suspicious type. |

If it were a Lunar Module part, the part number would begin with "LDW" and the contract number would simply be NAS9-1100. The contract number on the drawing, although not fully legible, is definitely not that. But I disagree with CMikeW. I think the Lunar M writing is done by the same person. |

Here is what I received when I ask my Landing Gear Group Head who started his aviation career at Grumman in Bethpage. I think A51 was the A6. Can't remember for sure. I think somebody wrote the (Lunar Module) in the lettering isn't quite the same. Looking at the Lunar M closer it is typical drafting lettering of the day but not really the same as the drawing title. |
