Hey, friends! I'm a lifelong space nut and have long enjoyed cS, but I'm relatively new to the collecting scene, so I wanted to share my first space-related custom display, a tribute to STS-26, "Return to Space"! This mission has a special place in my heart because it occurred less than one month after my birth, so researching the timeline was fun! After a while looking for the right items and design, I think it turned out beautifully! Everything is original, so the photographs are NASA Kodaks and all six autographs have been authenticated. The letter is a response to Julie Kertes, Wernher von Braun's personal secretary, and the flown flag display is not cut, just hidden under the mats for aesthetic and size considerations. Thanks to many on this site for their help and inspiration! |

I was there in person to view the launch from a NASA causeway. Memorable, with people yelling 'Go baby, go!' and ringing cowbells |

Thank you all so much for the kind words and cool story! I always wished I had an opportunity to see a shuttle launch in person, but it was never in the cards. From what I understand, this was the only all veteran crew since Apollo 11 largely because a failure of this mission likely would have meant an abrupt and early end to the STS program. Who knows where we would be today if that was the case and thank goodness it wasn't! |
