I've been wondering for a long time what fabric was used for the American flags that were sewed onto blankets before they were installed in the cargo bay. With the extreme temperature they'd be exposed to, it couldn't have been a regular flag!

The interior of the shuttle payload bay, and any payloads and the RMS 'Canadarm' are covered with Nomex thermal blankets, so I imagine it would be made of this same flame/heat-resistant material.

I worked on the shuttle! The payload bay liner and the Canadarm was covered with Beta Cloth. We made the blankets for the payload bay, too. I don't remember Nomex being used except in the upper wing area and top of the cargo bay doors. I know the blanket the flag was sewn on was Beta, so it makes sense now that I think about it, that the flag would be Beta as well!
