I have a fragment of HRSI tile that was removed from space shuttle Discovery after its maiden flight. STS-41D launched on Aug. 30, 1984 and landed at Edwards Air Force Base on Sept. 5, 1984. The scrap paperwork accompanying the fragment was initiated on Sept. 6, 1984. I've got two questions:
Would the post processing, including tile inspection and replacement, have actually started the day after the landing?
Would the tile replacement work have taken place at Edwards?
Thanks for any scheduling insight.

Accomplished at the Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF) at Kennedy vice Edwards.

I suspect both would have taken place back at KSC.

At least preliminary post-flight tile inspections began at Edwards Air Force Base in support of the ferry flight back to the Kennedy Space Center.
It seems at least plausible that the paperwork may have begun at Edwards during a first inspection, to then be continued once the shuttle was back in Florida.

Additional research indicated the orbiter was returned to KSC on Sept. 10. According to my paperwork the tile was actually replaced on Sept. 24 so now it all makes sense.
