I bought a Charlie Duke autographed lunar orbit chart a few years ago and wonder if the smart people here can tell me how it was used?

It has 10 map segments taped together in a continuous loop. It is similar to the recent Bonhams auction lot 262.

I am really interested in how the charts were physically handled. Did the crew have a frame to roll through as they passed over the surface? The chart is in a loop and tapered like a slice of a sphere, may have been awkward to handle in zero or low G.

Crazy idea here, but why not send a letter to Charlie Duke and ask him?

Sending a letter to Duke with such a question is a wonderful idea and should give you a wonderful keepsake, too. I did just that a few years back. I sent a large unsigned Apollo 16 chart with questions as to what the chart detailed and how it would have been used in lunar orbit. He replied with a very lengthy description on the chart and with great detail of the lunar view photographs that are part of the chart. It is probably one of the nicest through-the-mail items I have in my collection!

Peter, if you find more about this chart, please keep us posted. I own one like that purchased from Donnis several years ago.

Francois, yes I will certainly post any info I get. I have not yet written to Mr Duke, but hope to shortly.

Your collection sounds interesting, any website or list anywhere?

A website or a list? Not yet, not yet...

You can see details of my most researched artefact here, though.
