I see that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing on July 16th will be offering an Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Currency Set. Anxious to see that.
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is pleased to introduce the 2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Currency Set to celebrate the moon landing.

The set features a Series 2013 $50 note with a serial number beginning with "1969" and an engraved representation of the famous "Buzz Aldrin on the Moon" photograph taken July 20, 1969. The reflection in Aldrin's visor — which includes Neil Armstrong, the United States flag, and the lunar lander — is embossed.

The note is protected by a clear, acid-free polymer sleeve, and the engraved print features a limited edition number matching the last four digits of the serial number on the $50 note.

US Mint's website has been updated to now show images of what the set includes.

Since I was already in Washington, DC for this morning's unveiling of Neil Armstrong's Apollo 11 spacesuit at the National Air and Space Museum, I swung by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's visitor center this afternoon and picked up one of these newly-released 50th anniversary currency sets.

Of note, the sample set on display in the gift shop (and therefore not available for sale) was serial number 0716 of 8000. But as the serial number of the sets match the last four digits on the $50 bills, this bill's serial was 19690716.

I wonder if the entire series of anniversary dates (0716 through 0724) was held back or if some lucky collectors are going to end up with sets in that sequence.

Oh now wouldn’t that be cool. I never thought of the significance of those numbers for this set.

I ordered my set right at noon. Will let you know if I am so lucky. (Not holding my breath.)
