The Documentary Channel release
The Documentary Channel Blasts Off into Space with Launch of IMAX Originals

IMAX Films Focusing On NASA's Space Program Are Highlighted During Lineup Beginning with "Hail Columbia!," Tom Cruise narrated "Space Station" and "Destiny In Space"

The Documentary Channel (DOC) will unveil its exclusive block of IMAX Originals programming on Sunday nights beginning April 12, 2009 when it premieres the first three of its 21-film IMAX film package. Earlier in 2008, DOC became the first television network to secure the exclusive U.S. television rights to the IMAX XXI Film Package, transferred to the High Definition format, with a multi-year contract through Northstar Media.

The IMAX Originals primetime Sunday schedule debuts on DOC with a series of top flight IMAX films celebrating man's journey into space. Throughout the month of April, audiences will be treated to visually spectacular documentaries giving viewers the sense that they are about to travel to the final frontier. The month has special significance since April 12th is a special date in aerospace history, marked by man's first trip into outer space (Yuri Gagarin, April 12, 1961) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) first space shuttle launch (Columbia, April 12, 1981).

On Sunday, April 12, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, DOC helps celebrate these anniversaries by premiering an IMAX tripleheader starting with "Hail Columbia!" which spotlights the inaugural voyage of the world's first space shuttle. Directed by David Douglas, the 1982 IMAX film goes behind-the-scenes with astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen as they prepare for their historic launch. Viewers will feel the thunderous liftoff and our heroes awe as Columbia achieves orbit for the first time.

At 8:45 p.m. ET/PT, narrator Tom Cruise helps viewers experience for themselves life in zero gravity away from our planet when DOC premieres "Space Station." Produced and directed by Toni Myers in 2002, viewers lift off with astronauts and cosmonauts from Florida's Kennedy Space Center and Russia's Baikonur Cosmodrome to rendezvous in their new home 220 miles above Earth.

At 10 p.m. ET/PT, "Destiny in Space" pays tribute to the spirit of our continuing exploration of the solar system. During the 1994 film produced by Graeme Ferguson, viewers will board a satellite and look back at the shuttle orbiting Earth; join astronauts deployed to repair the Hubble Telescope and travel million of miles above the contours of Venus and Mars.

"It is with great pride that The Documentary Channel is the first network to premiere these extraordinary and often breathtaking IMAX films to television audiences in North America," says Tom Neff, The Documentary Channel CEO and founder. "IMAX has established a well-deserved one-of-a-kind reputation for filmmaking, and we hope viewers will take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy our new IMAX Originals lineup every Sunday."

DOC continues its IMAX Originals space theme on Sunday, April 19, with broadcast news icon Walter Cronkite narrating "The Dream Is Alive," at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Viewers unite with astronauts aboard the shuttle as they orbit around outer space getting spectacular views of the towering Andes, the boot of Italy and the Nile. The film was shot in 1984 by shuttle crews during the height of NASA's ambitious space program, and features America's unbridled optimism at that time. The documentary highlights the 15 shuttle missions that were scheduled during 1986 until the morning of Jan. 28 when the Challenger exploded off the coast of Florida, killing all seven crew members. It provides a fascinating look back at our country's enthusiasm for space travel and the devastating consequences of the program's unresolved safety issues and unrealistic expectations.

"Mission to Mir" is DOC's featured IMAX film on Sunday, April 26, at 8 p.m. ET/PT which will provide viewers with the opportunity to spend time aboard the world's first long term space station. Since March of 1995, NASA astronauts have worked as crew members aboard the Russian Space Station Mir. Filmed by the astronauts themselves in their weightless surroundings, viewers will get an unprecedented tour of Mir, a place international scientists have called home since 1986.

Space.com: Space IMAX Films Launch to Small Screen
A series of IMAX space films that launched the grandeur of human spaceflight onto expansive screens around the world is headed for televisions across the United States, even as astronauts prepare to make a new film at the Hubble Space Telescope next month.

On Sunday, April 12, the Documentary Channel will broadcast the first of its catalogue of 21 IMAX films to celebrate the birth of human spaceflight and NASA's space shuttle fleet. The three-film marathon kicks off with the 1982 film "Hail Columbia!" in high-definition and will air on the simultaneous anniversaries of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin's historic first spaceflight in 1961 and NASA's inaugural launch of the space shuttle Columbia in 1981.

"It is only fitting that we premiere these three magnificent IMAX films, including "Hail Columbia", on this same date to celebrate one of America's greatest achievements and to recognize the heroes and triumphs of NASA," Documentary Channel founder and CEO Tom Neff told SPACE.com.

Just giving a re-watch to "The Dream is Alive" — been a long long time — and I was wondering what flight was the first launch sequence shown in the film. The film opens with a landing, which I know to be 51A. I am wondering if the launch is 51A as well.
