Elon Musk is TIME's 2021 Person of the Year.
... One day, he hopes, the rockets will carry 100 people at a time to Mars, where the ships can be refilled with fuel manufactured on the Red Planet and shuttled back to Earth. Asked when he sees this happening, Musk pauses for a long moment, as if calculating all the variables—federal regulations and production schedules, test-flight targets and bathroom requirements. "I'll be surprised if we're not landing on Mars within five years," he finally says.

I am not an Elon Musk fan and I take a lot of what he says with a grain of salt, but I believe that this honor is totally justified. He has changed our expectations about space travel, has left Boeing in the dust regarding "affordable" access to LEO, has shown much promise for developing heavy-lift capability, and has shaken up the auto industry in a very good way.

Congratulations, but I see this as not just for Musk, but for his teams. He’d be nothing without them.

Yes, his timelines and statements are optimistic, but they are a planning and motivational tool. He is getting it done. Prior to Musk we’ve had nothing but stagnation from all the other companies and agencies around the world. To be blunt, in terms of getting boots on Mars, they’ve done nothing. If you removed SpaceX from the equation, who here sincerely believes that we’d honestly be any closer now than we were in 1975? Or 1965? Or 1985? Dreaming, cancelling projects. Failing to fund. Going nowhere.

Musk can be a snarky "showboat" that ruffles people's feathers at times, but there's absolutely no denying that historically he's already left a huge mark in both the aerospace and the automotive worlds.

Not sure what we would be watching launched if he had not stepped up. Congratulations.
