I recently purchased some papers from Thomas Paine's estate including part of a draft of a history of the Manned Spacecraft Center written by Robert Merrifield. The covering letter attached to the draft showed that it had been sent to Dr. Paine for his comments. The letter is dated February 1971. I am trying to find the published copy of this book but so far without any success. Does anyone know what title this book was eventually published under? |

Merrifield was a JSC historian who recorded 109 interviews from 1967 to 1971 for a possible book project, but there’s so sign anything was ever published. Many transcripts are available as part of the JSC Oral History Project. |

Several NASA Special Publications cite the book as, "Men and Spacecraft: A History of the Manned Spacecraft Center (1958-1969)" but identify it as a draft or unpublished.Perhaps it was never released. |

A related book that was published in 1993, is NASA SP-4307, "Suddenly Tomorrow Came...A History of the Johnson Space Center" by Henry Dethloff. After living in College Station for 11 years, I found out that he lived just a couple miles from me. Last year I took this book and a few other Texas A&M Histories he had written to his house and spent almost an hour with him even though he wasn't in very good health. I think he enjoyed some company. I was very sad when he passed away the following week. |

Thanks everyone - It seems that it was sadly never published. |
