For some time now I have been collecting audio tapes from Apollo missions, and have been digitizing them. I now have a large enough collection to be confident it is worthy of a post here.

While most of these sets are small, some are very large indeed. The most notable sets are that of Dutch and German broadcasts, which are very rare and I have found very little information on. I have also been told my ABC recordings are quite rare.

You can listen to all these recordings on my public archive.

  • NL-1: Apollo 8 through 15.
See PNG file for reels and missions. Several 1/4 inch R2R reels that were used to record Dutch television and radio broadcasts about Apollo missions.

Notes: Revox A77 can't play slow enough to play tapes at correct speed. RAW files are unprocessed, PROC files slowed down to compensate for incorrect speed.

  • NL-2: Apollo 12 through 17.
Several 1/4 inch R2R reels that were used to record Dutch television and radio broadcasts about Apollo missions. Tapes also contain German and English broadcasts.

Notes: Track layout was not always clear, I tried to label tracks (TRK#) as the chronological order they would have been recorded, and should be played back in.

  • Ebay-1-AS11: Apollo 11
Three 1/4 inch R2R tapes with home recordings, presumable off TV.

  • Ebay-2-AS17: Apollo 17
One 1/4 inch R2R tape with home recordings, presumable off TV.

Notes: Only Apollo audio on one side.

  • Ebay-3: Apollo 11 and 13
Six 1/4 inch R2R tapes with home recordings, presumable off TV.

Notes: ABC broadcasts, which apparently are pretty rare. Also contains audio from state dinners and visits with astronauts.

  • Ebay-4-AS11 (work in progress): Apollo 11
+50 1/4 inch R2R tapes with home recordings, presumable off TV.

Notes: Huge lot of CBS Apollo 11 coverage, before, during and beyond. This lot might contain the entire Apollo 11 CBS broadcast. It may be a copy of some kind of master, given it starts and stops with the CBS jingle every time. Could anybody confirm this?

  • Thrift-1: Apollo 11
1/4 inch audio tape found at thriftstore.

Notes: Origin unknown. Left channel is a to me unknown noise with some kind of beep every second. Right channel is voice.

  • Thrift-2 Apollo 17
1/4 inch width 10 inch reel audio tape.

Notes: Appear to be recordings of CAPCOM ground control loop at Houston. Origin unknown.

Please tell me what you think. If you got any tapes you want digitized, email me!

All times are CT (US)
