A four-part documentary (each part being an hour long) is airing on the Washington-area PBS station WETA starting, well, nine minutes ago. The first episode, "From the Ground Up", will re-air a couple of times this week. It is probably airing on other PBS stations around the country. |

This series originally aired on the BBC in 2009 and was produced by Dangerous Films, the same company behind "When We Left Earth" and the docudrama "Moon Shot". According to the director of programming for HoustonPBS, "this won't be showing everywhere, it's not a PBS program. We had to buy it directly from the BBC." |

This series is being shown in the UK on a Sky satellite channel, Eden HD. I picked it up in the middle of the first episode and was treated to some spectacular high-definition Gemini movie footage. I see from earlier posts that the series was made by Dangerous Films, but I'm not entirely sure if it's the same as the Dangerous Films series "When We Left Earth." Is it an entirely different series, or just a re-working of "When We Left Earth"?If different, is it available on Blu-ray? I ask this question having found only a DVD set on Amazon UK, and nothing on Amazon US. Does anyone have both series on Blu-ray? If so, can you comment on "The Space Age: NASA's Story"? |

To avoid accusations of laziness, I've now had a chance to review the first episode (of four) of "Space Age: NASA's Story" and to compare it with "When We Left Earth." It seems that the former is a shorter version of the latter. I don't see anything in "Space Age" which isn't in "WWLE." One obvious omission from the shorter series are the various filmed observations by Neil Armstrong. I know there was some controversy about the use of those film clips, but they do add weight and credibility to the longer series.Bottom line: if you have "When We Left Earth" you probably don't need "Space Age" although the shorter series has merit in its own right. | |
