From Bill Barry, NASA Chief Historian:
Celebrate 50 Years of NASA History Books

The NASA History Program published its first book, "Project Mercury: A Chronology," in 1963. To celebrate the golden anniversary of NASA's history books we are offering you a chance to get copies of some of our older titles for free.

While supplies last you can pick up free copies of many of our publications from the NASA Headquarters Information Center. You can find a complete list of what is available (including some of our more recent books that are not available under the free book promotion) here.

If you can't make it to the Headquarters Information Center, they will ship to you at a cost of $3 per title. Unfortunately, we can't offer shipping and handling to non-US addresses. (My apologies to our overseas fans.)

Happy Reading in 2013!

Yes, the staff of the information office at NASA Headquarters is friendly and attentive. When I first visited two years ago, I couldn't believe the free 'swag' (books, lithos, posters, stickers) they had to offer. But be prepared to carry home some heavy bags! Also, a look around the nice reference library next door and gift shop in the lobby is also recommended. Note: all are only open weekdays, closed Federal holidays.

I'll be in D.C. in a couple of weeks and will be spending several hours at the National Air and Space Museum. Where is NASA HQ in relation to the museum? Very far?

This summer I passed through DC and took a night at the Residence Inn to take my son to some of the museums [NASM included of course] - now to find out that I overlooked NASA HQ + gift shop literally across the street from my room is just painful.

Many thanks for posting the book and CD-ROM link!!

Wow. This made my day. Some great titles on that list. My wife said I could only order 10. So 10 it is.

I ordered 11 (didn't exactly run it by my wife). And then 2 weeks from now I'm going to go over there and see if there's anything else that catches my eye. What a great deal.

Just completed my order form. But remember it says to call 202-358-0000 to check availability before ordering.

Yeah, I did that Mel. They had all of the titles I wanted. Hope that's still true when the order arrives!

There are some GOOD titles on this list. I need to wait a couple days for a little slush fund, but I see at least 6 titles critical to my research and probably 6 others that are "nice to have" titles.

I also received my box of 11 books, plus a few monographs and DVD-roms, today. What a nice haul! I also happened to be in D.C. on Friday in connection with the Mattingly appearance at Udvar-Hazy, so I went by NASA HQ and picked up a few more titles that Jay Chladek recommended to me (thanks, Jay!). These books are really nice additions to the space library I am building.

If you're thinking about taking advantage of this great offer, I wouldn't wait too long. When I was at the Information Center on Friday, I had planned to pick up all four volumes of Boris Chertok's Rockets and People set, but they had run out of copies of volume 3. I got the other three volumes, though.

Couldn't ask for a better deal.

I heard Bill Barry, NASA chief historian, who shared:
The shortage in supply on Rockets and People III was a temporary supply glitch. We have limited storage space in the Info Center and it takes a while to get the books from the warehouse to HQ. We were surprised by the demand for that one.

We still have plenty of copies of all four volumes of the Rockets and People series. (It is a great read – I'm glad people are enjoying it.)

Folks:

They still have lots of books - I just made my trek there on my day off yesterday. Made a big haul; 16 books - 34 lbs! The staffers there are very nice to work with. They were able to call and find a copy of Asif Siddiqi's "Challenge to Apollo" for me.

They still have a very good selection at the NASA HQ Info Center; I just picked up 13 more books on Friday. They still have a all 4 Rockets & People in stock.

Please, would someone be able to order a hardback version of these if they are still available? I will pay shipping from US to NL.

Carl, some years ago I purchased On the Shoulders of Titans and This New Ocean (Mercury) from the NASA history office, and both were paperback editions. I'm not sure about your other two desired titles, but I believe the Titans hardcover is long out of print.

The version of "On the Shoulders of Titans" that they have is paperback. "Before This Decade is Out" is a hardback.

I just contacted these folks and all of the “Free” publications are still available. If you have been putting off ordering as I have, you still have a chance. (“Free”- but $3/book S&H)

Many books still available at the NASA Hq. Information Center, including the four-volume "Rockets and People."

I went by recently during a visit to DC museums, and the staff could not be more friendly. They, and the library they share space with, are in a new location in the same building.

If you are in the DC area, you should stop by, and also see the small exhibits of models and wall displays honoring the Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia crews in the library. The closest Metro stop is Federal Center SW.

And if you must send your haul by mail back home, there is a post office just two blocks away inside the Gerald Ford Congressional office building.

If you stop by they always have ample pubs for sale (both free and to purchase). They always have a box ready to go for big hauls, at least it seems like it.

I can second that. On my trip there last year, they did forward a box of my 'haul' to New York, free of charge.

Not sure about foreign mailings.

And yes, bring a sturdy bag because some of the hardback/softcovers are heavy. The multi-volume set "Rockets and People" is worth the trip — and any muscle injuries.
