Episode 3 of the PBS documentary series "Makers" is titled, Women in Space. "Women in Space" traces the history of women pioneers in the U.S. space program. Some, like aviators Wally Funk and Jerrie Cobb, passed the same grueling tests as male astronauts, only to be dismissed by NASA, the military, and even Lyndon Johnson, as a distraction. It wasn't until 1995 that Eileen Collins became the first woman to pilot a spacecraft. The program includes interviews with Collins, as well as Sally Ride's classmates Shannon Lucid, Rhea Seddon and Kathryn Sullivan, and features Mae Jemison, the first woman of color astronaut, and Peggy Whitson, the first female commander of the International Space Station. The hour ends with the next generation of women engineers, mathematicians and astronauts — the new group of pioneers, like Marleen Martinez, who continue to make small but significant steps forward. Narrated by Jodie Foster. "Women in Space" debuts on Oct. 14 at 9/8c on PBS, with a special screening the following day at 8 p.m. EST on Makers.com. |

"Makers: Women in Space" just aired on PBS. Overall, a strong, well-paced, engaging documentary. There were a few minor errors (and the three that stand out are only errors based on frame of reference, e.g. Armstrong stepping on the moon on July 21 rather than 20, and Gene Cernan being the "11th and last man to walk on the moon") and I cringed the couple of times when Jodie Foster pronounced NASA as "Nassau." Also, as others have suggested, I think Valentina Tereshkova (at least) deserved a mention. But those are really minor points. The film footage included some scenes I had not seen before and the choice of interviews was excellent. In addition to those listed in the program summary reprinted above, it was great to see the National Air and Space Museum's Margaret Weitekamp, Lynn Sherr, spacesuit engineer Joe Kosmo and Lockheed Martin's Marleen Martinez included (among many others). If you missed the broadcast tonight, it's well-worth tuning in tomorrow night (Oct. 15) on Makers.com. |
