Beyond Blue Skies: The Rocket Plane Programs That Led to the Space Age by Chris Petty In 1945 some experts still considered the so-called sound barrier an impenetrable wall, while winged rocket planes remained largely relegated to science fiction. But soon a series of unique rocket-powered research aircraft and the dedicated individuals who built, maintained, and flew them began to push the boundaries of flight in aviation's quest to move ever higher, ever faster, toward the unknown. Beyond Blue Skies examines the thirty-year period after World War II during which aviation experienced an unprecedented era of progress that led the United States to the boundaries of outer space.Between 1946 and 1975, an ancient dry lakebed in California's High Desert played host to a series of rocket-powered research aircraft built to investigate the outer reaches of flight. The western Mojave's Rogers Dry Lake became home to Edwards Air Force Base, NASA's Flight Research Center, and an elite cadre of test pilots. Although one of them — Chuck Yeager — would rank among the most famous names in history, most who flew there during those years played their parts away from public view. The risks they routinely accepted were every bit as real as those facing NASA's astronauts, but no magazine stories or free Corvettes awaited them, just long days in a close-knit community in the High Desert. The role of not only the test pilots but the engineers, aerodynamicists, and support staff in making supersonic flight possible has been widely overlooked. Beyond Blue Skies charts the triumphs and tragedies of the rocket-plane era and the unsung efforts of the men and women who made amazing achievements possible. - Hardcover: 416 pages

UNP informed me a week ago that Chris's much anticipated book would be in their warehouse "any day now," so the wait for early purchasers is almost over. |

Hmmm, to what extent does this one overlap with Michelle Evans' Outward Odyssey book on the X-15? |

Not a great deal, Henry, and only where it's unavoidable in recording the complete history of rocket-powered aircraft. It's mostly about the quest to overcome Mach 1, Edwards AFB, and the pioneering pilots who wanted to fly faster and higher. There's also an excellent history of the flying wings. When Chris first approached me with this book concept I also wondered about a possible crossover of information with Michelle Evans' wonderful book on the X-15 program, and suggested they make contact with each other to ensure this was minimised — which they did. So be assured this is terrific book about several decades of extraordinary development and some pretty amazing people. |

Seems like the same cover photo is being used as on Roger Launius's book "From NACA to NASA to Now." |

Although they use the same image, nothing beats the classic simplicity of a UNP book cover... |

Half price offer from UNP showed up in my email today. (May not be new.) I've been interested in this book since hearing about it and have now ordered it. I'm anticipating a really good read about a fascinating period of history. |

A brilliant read, very well written and recreates the atmosphere of a special time in the era of early Edwards Air Force Base. Thoroughly researched and I have learned so much more about the pre X-15 flights and of the lifting bodies, plus the personalities of pilots, ground crews and management.I do not think it clashes with the superb "The X-15 Rocket Plane" by Michelle Evans in this series as it compliments it by going through those flights in a different way. Looking at the same events through another angle is always interesting and gives a broader understanding, to me anyway, of these exciting and historical times. I did wonder why there was no mention of the rocket assisted NF104 zoom flights taken by the ARPS but perhaps there wasn't room and that could possibly make yet another subject in this wonderful Outward Odyssey series. Only a suggestion. Thanks to Chris Petty for this welcome addition to my library. |
